src: cdn1.thr.com

Grease is a 1978 American musical romantic comedy based on a musical of the same name. Written by Bronte Woodard and directed by Randal Kleiser in his theatrical debut film, the film depicts the lives of two senior high school seniors: a naughty boy (played by John Travolta) and a good girl (played by Olivia Newton-John) in the late 1950s. Grease works both critically and commercially. Her soundtrack album ended in 1978 as the second best-selling album of the year in the United States, behind the soundtrack of the 1977 blockbuster movie Saturday Night Fever, and won the film Oscar nomination for "Hopelessly Devoted" to You " who lost the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Donna Summer's "Last Dance" from Thank God It's Friday at the 51st Academy Awards).

The sequel, Grease 2 , was released in 1982, with Maxwell Caulfield and Michelle Pfeiffer in the lead role. Few original cast members change their roles.

Plot

In the summer of 1958, Danny Zuko and the beautiful Australian girl, Sandy Olsson, met on the beach and fell in love. When the summer ends, Sandy, whose family returns to Australia, is worried that they may never meet again, but Danny tells her that their love is "just the beginning." At the beginning of the new school year at Rydell High School ("Grease"). Danny reunites with fellow gang members, T-Birds, among whom his best friend Kenickie, along with Doody, Sonny, and Putzie are members. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Danny, Sandy arrives at school, with his family plans changed, with his new friend Frenchy, a Pink Ladies member. Another Pink Woman Rizzo, Marty, and Jan also came, eager to be seniors.

At lunch, Frenchy introduces Sandy to the other Pink Ladies while Danny and T-Birds mock fun at soccer players, including the handsome Tom Chisum. Each group asks Danny and Sandy, respectively, about their summer and they each independently portray their romance without using another name. Sandy's version emphasizes romance, truth and purity, while Danny's version is more sexual ("Summer Nights"). Back in class, Sandy reveals that Danny Zuko met him, and Rizzo teases that maybe he'll see her again.

In a war rally before a soccer game, Sandy performs with a cheerleading squad and catches the eye of Tom Chisum. Kenickie arrives in a car that was beaten up by him saying he plans to rebuild so he can race on Thunder Road, where popular street races are. Rizzo puts Sandy and Danny together, surprising the two. Sandy is happy, but Danny, trying to impress other T-Birds, acts irritating and indifferent, makes Sandy annoyed. Frenchy invites Sandy to stay at the Pink Ladies to cheer her up.

Rizzo and the other girls press Sandy to smoke a cigarette and drink wine while sleeping. Frenchy reveals that he plans to get out of Rydell to go to a beauty school and in an effort to prove himself, trying to break into Sandy's ears, makes Sandy sick. Rizzo mocks his innocent nature ("Look Me, I'm Sandra Dee") and go when T-Birds arrives in Kenickie's car. Rizzo tries to make Danny jealous by flirting with Kenickie, but Danny does not budge and leaves. Kenickie goes with Rizzo, dropping Putzie, Sonny, and Doody. Sandy deplores his feelings for Danny, regardless of his previous behavior ("Despair to you").

Kenickie and Rizzo, while in the middle of having sex, are distracted by Leo and Cha-Cha, the warring greasers. Leo insulted Rizzo and deliberately crashed his own street racer into Kenickie's. At the same time, Kenickie condoms were destroyed.

The next day, T-Birds looked over at Kenickie's car, and although they were initially skeptical of its potential, Danny and Kenickie explained the modifications they could add to make it into a hot-rodding sex machine ("Greased Lightnin '"). At Frosty Palace's popular headquarters, Danny apologizes to Sandy for his behavior at the rally, but he refuses it. In an effort to impress Sandy, Danny approached Coach Calhoun about joining the team. After a fight with basketball, wrestling, and baseball athletes, Calhoun suggested cross-country running. He managed to get Sandy's attention and two reconciliations.

Danny takes Sandy to the Frosty Palace for a date. Kenickie found them and the gang sitting together; Danny and Sandy, uncomfortable around the others, left. Putzie asks Jan for the upcoming school dance and she agrees. Kenickie and Rizzo were involved in the debate and separation. Frenchy, whose hair has turned bright pink, said that a waitress had dropped out of beauty school and was visited by a guardian angel who advised her to return to Rydell ("Beauty School Dropout").

At the school dance, Leo and Cha-Cha appear as the dates of each of Rizzo and Kenickie. Vince Fontaine, who hosted the live broadcast of the dance, teased Marty. All students take part in a dance contest that goes down into chaos ("Born to Hand Jive"). Danny and Sandy do well, but Sonny pulls Sandy off the dance floor, allowing Cha Cha to come in and win with Danny. Sonny, Putzie, and Doody month of national TV audiences, prompting Principal McGee to threaten to notify the federal government.

Danny apologizes to Sandy and tries to make up for it by taking him to a drive-in movie theater. She was not moved by her apologies until she asked him to put on her ring, which she gladly accepted. Danny then tries to come out with him, causing Sandy to angrily throw his ring at him and run away, leaving Danny confused ("Sandy"). Meanwhile, Rizzo admits she may be pregnant for Marty and asks her to keep it a secret, but the story goes back to Kenickie. Rizzo tells Kenickie that the baby is not his son, which lightens and irritates him.

The next day, T-Birds has finished Kenickie's car and he wants to race against Leo on Thunder Road. Sandy tells Rizzo he plans to watch the race and offers to help Rizzo despite rumors about Rizzo's character that has spread around the school. She thanked Sandy and thought to herself about how her sins were not as bad as they could be ("There's Bad Things I Can Do").

The T-Birds, Pink Ladies, and Scorpions gather for the race, with the winner receiving a loser car as a reward. Just before the race begins, Kenickie hits his head and asks Danny to race with him. Danny agrees and although Leo uses a bladed center hat (in the order of paying homage to Ben-Hur ), win the race. Sandy watched from afar and concluded that he had to change his approach to life, asking for French help ("Look Me, I'm Sandra Dee (Reprise)").

The gang celebrates graduation at a school carnival where Rizzo tells Kenickie that she is not pregnant and they are reunited. Danny arrives in a postman sweater and vows to do whatever it takes to win Sandy. Sandy surprised T-Birds when he arrived with a new hairstyle and dressed in black clothes and an open leather jacket. In the song, Danny and Sandy reaffirm their commitment to each other ("You're the One I Want"). Jan worries after graduation, the gang will not meet again, but Danny does not agree. They celebrate their friendship ("We Go Together") and Danny and Sandy depart with a red hot rod, which flies as they wave their friends goodbye.

Production

Casting

John Travolta previously worked with producer Robert Stigwood on Saturday Night Fever, had a newborn singing career at the time (including a top-10 hit "Let Her In" in 1976), and earlier appeared as a Doody in touring version production stage Grease . He made a number of casting recommendations that Stigwood eventually accepted, including suggesting Randal Kleiser (who had never directed theatrical features before but had directed Travolta in the 1976 film The Boy in the Plastic Bubble) as director, and Olivia Newton-John, later known almost exclusively as a country music singer, like Sandy. Newton-John has done a little acting before the movie, with just one movie credit (1970's previously unreleased movie Toomorrow, which preceded the singing breakthrough) for his name until then. Before accepting the role, Newton-John requested a screen test for Grease to avoid another career setback. The screen test is done with a drive-in movie scene. Newton-John, who is from England and lives most of his life in Australia, can not come up with a convincing American accent, and thus his character is rewritten into an Australian. Before Newton-John was hired, Allan Carr considered many names such as Ann-Margret, Susan Dey, and Marie Osmond for the lead role; Newton-John agreed to lower the asking price in exchange for star billing. In the case of the art of imitating life, Newton-John's music career will undergo a transformation similar to that of Sandy Olsson; the next album after Grease , the provocative title Totally Hot , featured a more sexual and pop-oriented approach, with Newton-John appearing on the cover of the album with all the same- tease.

Jeff Conaway, like Travolta, previously appeared in the stage version of Grease ; he has played Danny Zuko during a show on Broadway. Jamie Donnelly imitated his role as Jan of the Broadway show, the only member of the cast to do so; when her hair starts graying at this point, she has to color her hair to resemble her stage character. Kelly Ward has previously appeared as a similar sarcastic supporting character in The Boy in the Plastic Bubble with Travolta under Kleiser; he was cast as Putzie, a largely new character.

Lorenzo Lamas was a last-minute substitute for Steven Ford, who had stage fright just before filming and backed off. His role does not contain oral dialogue and requires Lamas to color his blond hair to not look like most other T-Birds (though Conaway and Ward are also blonde).

Henry Winkler was once considered the main character in this film. Winkler, who plays Arthur Fonzarelli on Happy Days , was originally chosen to play Danny. A lack of singing experience and fear of typecasting after Happy Days and The Lords of Flatbush film led him to reject the role. Adult film star Harry Reems originally signed to play Coach Calhoun; However, executives at Paramount nixed the idea because of Reems's previous work in adult movies, and producers cast Sid Caesar instead. Caesar was one of several veterans of the 1950s television (Eve Arden, Frankie Avalon, Joan Blondell, Edd Byrnes, Alice Ghostley, Dody Goodman) to play a role in supporting the role. By coincidence, Frankie Avalon and Randal Kleiser appeared in 1966 Fireball 500 , the latter in addition.

Location filming

The opening beach scene was shot at Malibu Leo Carrillo State Beach, making an explicit reference to From Here to Eternity . Rydell's exterior scenes, including basketball, baseball and track segments, were shot at Venice High School in Venice, California, while Rydell's interior, including a high school dance, was filmed at Huntington Park High School. The stay was done in a private home in East Hollywood. Paramount Pictures studio venue is a scene location involving Frosty Palace and the musical numbers "Greased Lightning" and "Beauty School Dropout". The drive-in movie scene was shot at Burbank Pickwick Drive-In (closed and torn down in 1989 and the shopping center took its place). The race was filmed in Los Angeles River, between First and Seventh Street Bridges, where many other films have been taken. The last scene in which the carnival took place was used by John Marshall High School. And because of budget cuts, a short scene was filmed at Hazard Park in Los Angeles.

Postproduction

The scene inside the Frosty Palace contains a clear blurring of the various Coca-Cola signs. Prior to the release of the film, producer Allan Carr has made a product placement deal with Coca-Cola's major competitor Pepsi (for example, Pepsi's logo can be seen in the animated opening sequence). When Carr saw a scene recording with Coca-Cola products and billboards, he directed Randal Kleiser to reshoot the scene with Pepsi products or remove Coca-Cola's logo from the scene. Because the overhaul is considered too expensive and time-consuming, matte optics are used to mask or obscure Coca-Cola references. 'Opacity' covers markers of trademarked menus and large wall posters, but red coolers with logos can not be changed adequately so they do not change. According to Kleiser, "We just have to hope Pepsi will not complain, they do not."

Due to an editing error, the closing scenes where Danny and Sandy's kisses were removed from the finished and missing prints before the theatrical release. The scene is only preserved in black and white; Kleiser attempted to have an existing recording that was colored and returned to the film for re-release in 1998 but was not satisfied with the results. The scene was included in addition to the 40th anniversary home video release, and Kleiser hopes to make another attempt to colorize a quite effective recording tape to be included in the film as he originally intended when the 50th anniversary movie came in 2028.

While only a few cast from the original films like Dody Goodman, Sid Caesar, Eddie Deezen, Didi Conn, Dennis Stewart and Eve Arden are repeating their respective roles. Soundtrack

The soundtrack album ended in 1978 as the second best-selling album of the year in the United States, only surpassed by another soundtrack album, from Saturday Night Fever movie, which also stars Travolta. The song "Hopelessly Devoted to You" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music - Original Song. The song "You're the One That I Want" was released as a single before the release of the film and became a live chart-topper, though not in stage performances or that had been seen in the movie at the time. In addition, the dance number for "You're the One That I Want" was nominated for a Land TV award for "Dance Dance Sequence You Reenacted in Your Living Room" in 2008. In the UK, two duets Travolta/Newton-John, "You 'Re the One That I Want' and 'Summer Nights', both number one hit and in 2011 still among the top 20 best-selling singles of all time (at No. 6 and 19 respectively). The title of the movie is also the number one hit single for Frankie Valli.

The song "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee" references Sal Mineo in the original stage version. Mineo was stabbed to death a year before filming, so the line was changed to call Elvis Presley instead. References to Troy Donohue, Doris Day, Rock Hudson and Annette Funicello are from the original stage version. Incidentally, this scene and the scene before and after the scene was filmed on August 16, 1977, the date of the death of Elvis Presley.

Some songs are not in the movie; The songs that appear in the movie but not in the soundtrack are "La Bamba" by Ritchie Valens, "Whole Lotta Shaking Going On" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "Alma Mater", "Alma Mater Parody", and "Rydell Fight Song". "Alone in the Drive-in (instrumental)," "Mooning", and "Freddy My Love" movies are not in this movie, although all three are listed at the end of the credits apart from being on the soundtrack. (Both "Mooning" and "Rock'n'Roll Party Queen," the latter being played in the film as background music, were written in music for a character named Roger who was written out of the film, replaced by non-singing Putzie. In general, all songs in the musical performed by characters other than Danny, Rizzo, Sandy or Johnny Casino are either taken from the movie or given to other characters, including Marty Maraschino's "Freddy My Love," Kenickie's "Greased Lightnin '," and Doody's "The Magic Changes. ") Two songs from the musical," Shakin 'in High School Hop "" and "All Choked Up," left both the movie and the soundtrack.

The songs appear in the movie in the following order:
