" I believe that we will win! " is the usual singing of sports events. Originating from Naval Academy Preparation School, this became a tradition among American Naval fans and students. In 2014, the singles gained national recognition as a rally call among US national men's (USMNT) men fans for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, becoming the team's official motto.
Chanting is the interaction of calls and responses between the two parties. It begins with a "I believe" call, followed by "I believe that" and "I believe we are", before ending with repeated shouts "I believe we will win!"

In 1998, Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) student Jay Rodriguez was assigned to make a spell to be used by his platoon and came up with "I'm sure we'll win!". It was first used during a NAPS basketball game against the US Military Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island. A year later, now a student of the Naval Academy, Rodriguez taught it to his classmate, cheerleader Corey Strong, who started using it during the 1999 Navy Army Match; in the fourth quarter of the Navy's 19-9 victory, Strong led the 4,000-strong Midshipman Brigade in the spell. In 2003, the Midshipmen team showed marked increases over their 3-30 records in the last three years; during that year's game against No. 25 Falcons Air Force at FedExField, Navy students began reading rebounds as Midshipmen won 28-25. In preparation for the Navy Game of the Year's End, the Navy sells T-shirts with the phrases written on them. The song is currently performed by the midshipmen at the closing stages of victory.
The singing eventually spread to other college sports, with fans of the men's basketball team Utah State Aggies adopting its use in 2009. The SDSU Show from San Diego State University and Harvard Crimson students also did during the game. Fans from various football clubs have also read it, including New York Red Bulls from Major League Soccer and French team FC Nantes. During the 2016 Ryder Cup, "U-S-A!" screams by American fans interspersed with the call "I believe we will win!"
United States soccer
According to Justin Brunken, co-founder of American football support group The American Outlaws, he first heard the singing during a US soccer game in Kansas City in 2011. He described it as "a newly grown song from there and caught on. many across the country and become synonymous with what we believe. " This has finally become the appeal for fans of the US national men's soccer team (USMNT). For the 2014 FIFA World Cup, ESPN uses singing in two ads promoting the Cup, one that portrays The American Outlaws and others featuring figures such as Kevin Costner, Ice Cube, and Barry Sanders. Trademarks San Diego State University
Strong, taught by Rodriguez, then placed in San Diego and earned a Master of Business Administration degree in San Diego State. In 2011, San Diego State's clothing store, Aztec Shops Ltd., tried to trademark the phrase. Strongly opposed the trademark, stating "everyone will be best served if they remove their efforts to cheer the trademark" and that the Naval Academy will reject it. In 2017, the Trademarks Court and the Appeal Rejected the trademark, saying it has been "widely used for a long time by various groups."
Non-sports use
After the death of Osama bin Laden in 2011, the Navy Academy was celebrated alongside Commander Robert E. Clark II. Clark leads the midshipmen in the modified song "I believe we have won!"
