History
Football is the university's first major sport. In 1889, a group of alumni from Toronto Baptist College and Woodstock College played an exhibition game against each other, sparking early intercity rivalry (when Toronto-based McMaster University). Full hockey clubs were then organized during the winter of 1896-1897. In 1897, the university had made all athletics, physical activity and sports under the jurisdiction of the central executive committee.
In 1906 McMaster University, together with the University of Ottawa, Royal Military College and the University of Trinity College have joined the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU), the first formal organization of athletic inter-college in Canada and the pioneer of today's Canadian Interuniversity Sport. The university team has been known as Robber McMaster since 1948. Name, Robber has been credited to Bill Cline, who on November 26, 1948, has a suggestion for the nickname of a men's university basketball team published in the school student newspaper, The Silhouette.
