Step dancing is a generic term for a dance style in which footwork is the most important part of the dance. Both motion and motion are restricted or considered irrelevant.
The dance steps include a clogging dance where steps are taken by players wearing clogs. Clogs that cling to the hard surface produce a distinctive sound that is an important element of the dance.
Stepdance Ireland is a world-renowned step dance form that has worldwide competitions. The beginning of the feis , or the competition, took place in 1897. Descending from traditional Irish dance, but the global popularity of the Riverdance troupe significantly changed its competitive form from traditional Irish standards. Both the traditional and the more modern competitive styles are characterized by the use of special shoes and by the costumes that can be very complicated. Ireland's footsteps are, by 2017, the only form of step dance that Broadway produces, Lord of the Dance , has been devoted.
Tap dance is a form of modern step dance that takes its influence from various forms of older steps.
Traditional forms of traditional step dance are still found in certain areas of the UK such as East Anglia and Dartmoor. This dance style is usually done informally in pubs for traditional folk songs, with dancers often carrying wooden boards for dancing.
Dance steps can also be found in other countries such as Malambo from Argentina and Zapateado from Mexico.
Another form of step dancing, Stepping, has been popularized by the National Pan-Hellenic Board. This dance has African roots and is an African American tradition as well as a part of Black History. Brotherhood members and associations join in the steps - elaborating the synchronized group routine conducted in competition between fraternities and associations called "step performances." The step shows the inclusion of cheerleading, military, and drill team movements, especially the element of call and response inherent in those forms. These aspects are not only important for energy stepping for entertainment use but also for bonding and pride in their organization.
