A vaporizer or vaporiser (a 'vape') is a tool used to vaporize the active ingredients of plant material, generally marijuana, tobacco, or other ingredients or mixtures for that purpose inhalation. However, they can also be filled with a mixture of propylene glycol, glycerin, and nicotine. (eg tobacco-free nicotine).
Vaporizers contain various forms of extraction chambers including straight holes, venturi, or sequential vents, and are made of materials such as metal or glass. The extracted vapor can be collected in an inflatable bag, or inhaled directly through a hose or tube. When used properly, colder temperatures due to lack of combustion result in significantly more efficient extraction of materials. Therefore, the effects of irritation and the dangers of smoking are greatly reduced, such as cigarette smoke.

An electronic cigarette is a battery-powered vaporizer that simulates the feelings of smoking, but without burning tobacco. Its use is commonly called "vaping". The user activates the electric cigarette by sucking or pressing a button. They are often cylindrical, but there are many variations. Some look like traditional cigarettes. Most can be reused but there is also a disposable version called first generation cigalikes. There are also second, third, and fourth generation devices. Instead of cigarette smoke, users inhale aerosols, commonly called steam. E-cigarettes usually have a heating element that sprayed a liquid solution known as e-liquid. E-liquids usually contain propylene glycol, glycerin, water, nicotine, and flavorings. E-liquids are also sold without propylene glycol, without nicotine, or without flavor.
The health benefits and risks of electric cigarettes are uncertain. There is tentative evidence that they can help people quit smoking, but they have not proved better than regulated drugs. By 2014, their usefulness in reducing tobacco hazards is unclear, but they have the potential to be part of a strategy to reduce tobacco-related deaths and diseases. Their security risk for users is similar to smokeless tobacco. FDA-regulated milk and drug replacement products are safer than electric cigarettes, but electric cigarettes may be safer than cigarettes.

Dry herbal vaporizers can be used to inhale marijuana. From research on marijuana evaporation, very little deals with the quality of steam extracted and shipped; on the contrary, research usually focuses on the mode of use of the vaporizer. There are 483 identifiable chemical elements known to exist in marijuana plants, and at least 85 different cannabinoids have been isolated from plants. Research has shown that marijuana cannabis exposes users to lower levels of harmful substances than smoking cannabis. This finding is important to estimate that 10-20 percent of patients with chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and HIV/AIDS have admitted smoking marijuana for therapeutic purposes. In a study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in May 2008, it was stated that vaporizers were "a suitable method for THC administration". A 2007 study by the University of California, San Francisco, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Neurology, found that "almost no exposure to harmful combustion products using evaporation devices". A 2006 study conducted by researchers at Leiden University found that the vaporizer is a "safe and effective cannabinoid delivery system". This study states that the amount of THC sent by vaporizers equals the amount sent by smoking. Due to other studies and studies, vaporizers are considered a healthy medical device to provide THC.

Not everyone has been scientifically tested. The research using a vaporizer found the highest delivery efficiency at about 226 ° C (439 ° F), falling to about half the efficiency at 150 ° C (302 ° F) to 180 ° C (356 ° F) on the material. The purest preparation yields the highest efficiency, about 56% for pure THC compared to 29% for plant material (female flower peak) with 12% THCA content. In addition to THC, several other cannabinoids as well as various other plant components including terpenoids are detected in plant material. Using pure THC in a vaporizer, no degradation product (delta-8-THC (D8-THC), cannabinol (CBN), or unknown compound) is detected by HPLC analysis. The longer the steam is stored, the more THC is lost as it condenses on the surface of the vaporizer or balloon. This loss can be ignored for several minutes but may exceed 50% after 90 minutes. Leiden University's study found that as many as 30-40% of the inhaled THC is not absorbed by the lungs but only exhaled. However, they found no large individual differences in exhaled amounts.

Vaporizers are sometimes used by cooks as a method of applying controlled heat for herbs and spices to release flavors that are difficult to titrate or apply, or that may be damaged by overheating while cooking.
