The Washington Redskins Cheerleaders came second after the Pittsburgh Steelers in professional NFL cheerleading (1961, Rooneys wiped them out shortly thereafter), but continues to be the oldest professional soccer professional cheerleading organization.

Originally called Redskinettes , they cheered for the Washington Redskins since September 30, 1962. The first Redskinettes director was Grace Hutton. Initially he performed the cheerleaders with original (though not original) themed costumes, but later turned into clothing similar to other NFL cheerleading organizations, with no original theme.

In addition to touring with the football team, they have performed all over the world. In 1982 they were invited to become the first NFL cheerleaders to appear in Asia promoting US commercial products across Taiwan. In 1983, the cheerleaders produced their first calendar, which they have been doing ever since. In 1984 they were the fourth NFL squad to appear on a tour of United Service Organizations (USO) that entertained the armed forces in Turkey, Italy, Sicily, Spain and the 6th Fleet off the coast of France. Since then, they have participated in various tours of the Department of Defense (DOD) to entertain US soldiers and women, who have included Egypt in 2000, Guantano Bay, Cuba, in 2001, Kosovo in 2002, and others for a total over from 35 countries. On 3-17 December 2005, they completed their 20th tour abroad for USO, entertaining US troops in East Asia.

Washington Redskins Cheerleaders are also the first cheerleaders in the NFL to form alumni associations. The Washington Redskins The Cheerleader Alumni Association (WRCAA) was founded in 1984 by former Redskins Cheerleader Terri Crane-Lamb (1979-83). With a membership of over 200, WRCAA is by far the largest professional association of professional cheerleaders in the NFL.
