Mayday Parade was formed in the winter of 2005 after the merger of two local bands Tallahassee, Kid Named Chicago and Defining Moment. Kid Named Chicago features lead vocalist/guitarist Jason Lancaster, guitarist Alex Garcia and drummer Jake Bundrick, while Defining Moment features vocalist Derek Sanders, guitarist Brooks Betts, and bassist Jeremy Lenzo. In June 2006, their EP Tales Told by Dead Friends was released. The band follows the 2006 Warped Tour, selling copies of EPs to people marching. At the end of the summer, the group has sold 10,000 copies of EP. This sale attracted the attention of Fearless Records, who signed Mayday Parade on 29 August. Fearless label president Bob Becker said the group: "totally trustworthy, they are obviously good musicians, and they are really sounding strict, and we already know they work hard." Between late September and early November, the band went on a Text on the Dance Floor tour with MÃÆ'êlÃÆ' à © e, Wheatus, Brandtson, Lakes, and Fall of Transition. Tales Tell by Dead Friends was re-released via Fearless on November 7th.

Composition and recording
All the songs on A Lesson in Romantics were written on tour after the Warped Tour. The songs are about: "Being in a relationship while you're on the road, and the difficulties that come with it." Unlike EP bands, the album was "more unified" and "more organized", according to Garcia. Sanders thinks it stands "pretty good" for the EP, noting that it's "just as interesting", but "stronger." "Jamie All Over" was originally recorded by Kid Named Chicago, Lancaster's previous band. Sanders claimed the song was "somewhat difficult to choose" because the band had plenty of new material to choose from, but felt "quite happy" with the inclusion. "When I Get Home, You're So Dead" was one of the band's first songs to write. According to Garcia, the last track was called "You Be the Anchor Who Keeps My Feet on The Ground, I Will Be The Wing Keeping Your Heart In The Cloud" because the band "tries to be poetic".
Mayday Parade entered the studio in January 2007. The recording took place at Tree Sound, located in Atlanta, Georgia. The band worked with producers Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount, who also engineered sessions. "When I Get Home, You're So Dead" from Tales Told by Dead Friends was re-recorded because the previous song got a great response from fans. Natalie VanLandingham provides additional vocals on "Jersey", while Daniel Lancaster provides additional vocals on "Jamie All Over". Mixing was done by Mark Needham, while Steve Hall mastered the album on the Future Disc, located in McMinnville, Oregon. According to Mount, Lancaster's vocals for the album were "naked", implying no editing of the postal recording had been done.
Release
Lancaster left the band in March 2007 citing the lack of credit writing on the band's release. Lenzo and Bundrick filled for vocals Lancaster, while Garcia and Betts featured guitar parts of Lancaster. Garcia says this change makes the guitar "sound more vivid" and not "chaotic [ed]"; on the other hand, the group finds it hard to work who should sing the parts of Lancaster. Lancaster's departure hurts Sanders personally as "he is a good friend". Later that month, the band supported Plain White T on their US tour. On April 4th, "Black Cat" was made available for streaming via the Myspace Hot Topic profile. On April 13th, the release of Romantic Lessons was announced. Between early May and late June, the band went on tour with support from Bedlight for Blue Eyes, Driver Side Impact, and Sick City. The song list was revealed on May 18th. Sanders explained that the group "ended up feeling like one of the real bands" on the Warped Tour; they "have the bus for the first time this year". After this, the Independent Label Group, which helps promote and market Fearless releases, persuades Target Corporation to sell Romantic Lessons in its stores. The video for "Jamie All Over" was released via MTV on July 21st. The song was released to radio on September 2nd. In October and November, the band supported All Time Low on Compromising of Integrity, Morality, & amp; Principles in Exchange for Money tour. The band also made comments for every song on the album. Jason also recorded all his vocals naked for a romantic lesson in sic , which should really make a comment.I've waited ten years for that ".
