Air Academy School (or AAHS ) is a public high school serving the northwestern tip of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the United States Air Force Academy. The Air Academy, part of the Academy School District 20, has been included in 10 state high schools for high academic standards. It is the only high school in the United States built at the military academy (School District 20 also has an elementary school at the Air Force Academy).

The Water Academy is located at the foot of the Front Range hills, about 6,550 feet above sea level.

The school sports mascot is the "Cadet" (KAY-det), a fictitious bird with a mystical proportion representing the baby eagle. The name itself is a reference to the fact that high school can be seen as a "little brother" to the Air Force Academy. The USAFA student is called "Cadet," and the name of the AAHS mascot is replaced with the letter K, which produces "Cadet."

Histori

The school opened in 1956 on the grounds of the United States Air Force Academy for the academic year 1957-58 before the start of the first ceremony in 1958, making the 2007 class a 50th graduation class. This is the second oldest high school in Colorado Springs, behind Palmer High School. Originally built as a single building, now called the 'A' Building, completed in 1959, and covers all classrooms in the 100s. Building 'B' was added in the second year after the original building was built, and comprised of rooms in the 200s. Over the years, two other buildings were built to supplement the growing student population, Building 'C' (300 and canteen) and 'D' (400 and 500). The latest addition, an extension to the D Building that includes all the classrooms at 500, was completed in 1998 and comprises several new classrooms, as well as a new gym and band room. Both gyms are located in A Building, while the smallest gym (in Building C) is converted into a weightlifting center in 2004.

Daily schedule

The Air Academy school day begins as 7: 15-2: 15 daily, and initially has a 6th grade period, daily all-day schedule with 3 lunch shifts, over a period of 5. Different lunch turns are numbered 5A, 5B and 5C, for students who have a different lunch turn. In 1993, schools switched to alternate schedules every day, with days of rotation named 'Blue' and 'Silver' after school colors. School hours are changed to 7: 45-2: 45 daily. Class periods are numbered 'B1', 'B2', 'S1', 'S2', etc. For which classes will be attended on the Blue days and which classes are on the days of Silver. Until 2016, there is a period called 'Academy' time, from 9:10 to 9:35 daily. It is designed for students to visit their teachers to make work and tests lost (time intervention) and socialize. At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, schools change the timeframe, which they push back to Wednesday and Thursday each week. Each student is given a teacher based on their last name and grade level, and should visit the teacher and show them the pass permission or the reason for the permission to slip from another teacher if they wish or need to go elsewhere. This class period changed its name from Academy to 'Cadet Time.' The name 'Cadet Time' was first used starting with the academic year 2016-2017. From 2014 to 2016, lunch is after the 3rd period. Since 2016, lunch has been done after the 2nd period. Students also go to classes 3 and 4 each day (Blue and Silver) from 2014 to 2016. Therefore, the class period is called 'BS3' and 'BS4' or simply '3' and '4'. Similarly, this practice is also discontinued in 2016.

Other schedules are also made for special use, such as schedule 8 Period (for the day of snow cancellation and the beginning of each school year.) A full list of schedules used at school can be found here.
