"Rock & Roll Band" is a song written by Tom Scholz and was first released by the Boston rock band on the band's eponymous debut album. This is one of six songs Scholz worked on in his basement in 1974 and 1975 before Boston got his record deal, five of which finally appeared on the Boston album. The demo "Rock and Roll Band" was completed in 1974, along with three out of six. However, Scholz had begun writing songs the previous year, in the early 1970s. Parts of this drum and other early Boston songs were developed by Jim Masdea, but this is the only song on the album Boston played by Masdea. Scholz plays Klavin and all parts of the guitar, including the bass guitar, and Brad Delp singing vocals. Boston consistently opens with "Rock and Roll Band" while playing in live concerts.

Histori

"Rock & Roll Band" is the song Paul Ahern plays for Charlie McKenzie to draw his attention to an unnamed band that will become Boston. Shortly afterwards, Ahern and McKenzie entered as band manager.

"Rock and Roll Band" is one of several Boston songs with the theme of making music and how music makes them feel.According to Allmusic critic Vik Iyengar, it is "about the band" rising from a bar band. " In The Rough Guide to Rock, Charles Bottomley mentions Boston's "self-description". Lyrics that support this statement include:

Well we're just another band from Boston
On the way to try to meet the needs
Play all the bars, sleep in our car
And we practice on the streets.

However, the song's lyrics exaggerate the band's story, as they spent years working and refusing to get their record deal, rather than suddenly found by a recording executive who happened to catch the show. The Boston official website acknowledged that the song was "a bit interesting from a mythological group of self." Scholz himself admitted that the song was "pure fantasy" because the band had never played live or toured at the time the song was written. According to Scholz, the song was inspired by Masdea who told him to play in bands in Hyannis, Massachusetts and dream to find. Scholz decided to write the song "about everyone who dreams about it," though "that's not what happened with Boston." Todd Maternowski claimed that the band "set a precedent when they wrote the song" Rock and Roll Band, "about the gritty life of the rising musician, though never really experienced such a thing and earned a big record deal before the first live show them.
