Cheerleading is a recognized sport in Japan that requires physical strength and athletic ability. Cheerleading is available in junior high schools, high schools, colleges, clubs, and all star levels. Teams can be all women or coeds featuring men and women.

Competition guidelines
The competition routine is held on a 12 square meter mat where the entire surface can be used. Each team must perform a 2 minute and 30-second routine where 1 minute and 30 seconds of the routine may contain music. The routines showcase various elements including sideline cheers, pyramids and stunts, dance, and gymnastics. There is also a division for group action competition in which a group of five participants performs a light action routine of 60-65 seconds. There is also a division for partner action competition that includes one male and one female and one spy. This routine lasts about 55-60 seconds and can only combine stunting.

Associations and organizations
On July 13, 1988, the Japan Cheerleading Association Foundation was established to monitor the cheerleaders' world as a competitive sport in Japan and to promote healthy distribution and promotion of cheerleading competition. The Japan Cheerleading Association (JCA) also conducts cheerleading and leadership workshops, organizes domestic and international competitions, trains trainers, endorses competition equipment, and handles publications.
The International Federation of Cheerleading (IFC) is also based in Tokyo, Japan and is the world's cheerleading body.
The Asian Cheerleading Federation (AFC) is the cheerleading body in Asia and is one of the continental confederations that make up the International Federation of Cheerleading. It was formed in 2007 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.
