While these products were used to be made with real peanuts, in 2006, the nuts were discontinued, and the natural flavor, from peach and apricot holes, was used instead.

Mascots and promotions

Their mascot is an anthropomorphic bee, designed for the first ad by Dean Yeagle at Zander's Animation Parlor in New York City. The bee had no name until 2000, when Kristine Tong, a fifth-grader from Coolidge, Texas, won a national contest to name the bee, and gave it the nickname "BuzzBee". The name was shortened to Buzz. Buzz also appeared as host in the game Honey Nut Cheerios Spelling Bee , which was named after breakfast cereal. Buzz has been described by several different voice actors. He was originally voiced by Arnold Stang until 1990. He was then voiced by Billy West, Charlie Schlatter and Jason Marsden.

History

Historically, Honey Nut Cheerios has participated in many of the same promotional ads as the original brand, while collaborating with the NASCAR field and especially driver Bill Lester, in promoting a healthy diet. In 1985, Baskin-Robbins introduced a taste of ice cream based on a cereal called Honey Nut Crunch. Promotion tie-ins include gift certificates in cereal boxes and special Nut Crunch honey sausages at the shops.

General Mills has been active in bee conservation since 2011; In 2011, the company began investing in the Xerces Society to help promote the conservation of biodiversity and pollinators. In March 2017, General Mills announced the Buzz Bee image was removed from the Honey Nut Cheerios boxes. The new box image shows the white blank space where Buzz Bee used to be. Below a picture of a bowl of cereal, a plea for "Help Bring Back Bees" was added. This is to increase awareness of pollinator decrease. Cheerios promises to give wild flower seeds to be planted for bees. In the announcement, General Mills noted that 30% of the ingredients they use depend on pollinators. As part of this campaign, General Mills also plans to expand their pollinator habitat to 3,300 hectares. Honey Nut Cheerios surpassed their goal of 100 million seeds by distributing 1.5 billion seeds.

This campaign has caused controversy in some environmental communities. Kathryn Turner, an ecologist, commented that seed packets contain invasive species to multiple geographical locations, and encourage individuals to become more educated before planting seeds.

Ads

Ads for products have been the mainstay of the Saturday-morning cartoon program over the years. They generally portray the seductive mascot of an unfortunate child or an adult with Honey Nut Cheerios honey bowl, and their efforts to compete for it.

The advertising style has changed over the years. In the early 1980s, most ads featured adults talking about cereals and how good and healthy it was. During most of the 1980s and 1990s, the main ad was about Buzz trying to seduce someone with a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios. They will refuse, but Buzz will not give up; he will eventually tell them that cereal contains real golden honey and crispy beans/whole grains, and consumers will answer, "Do you say honey and beans?", and have cereal. The late 1990s advertising voiced by Andrew Morris, is about Buzz being a classic fairy tale and doing the same thing he always did in the past. The ad in the 2000s contained animated adventures about Buzz and his friends who outsmot criminals who tried to steal all the honey in the hive. Recently, ads have been shown on CGI. In 2013, Buzz was given a "makeover" by Nelly.

One Honey Cheerios ad that has been one of the longest ads in history featuring Buzz who visited the famous Ebenezer Scrooge. This ad (first aired in the fall of 1989) was finally revised to reflect the newer Buzz sound by Andy Morris in the mid-1990s, when the cereal tagline was changed to "No one can say No to Honey Nut Cheerios ". These ads generally air again during each winter holiday season. Since 2009, Heath Brandon has become a voice announcer for Honey Nut Cheerios. Some Buzz ads were used to advertise cereals in the UK during the 2000s, when the name was changed and it was removed from being a mascot.

Since 2016, this brand has shown Buzz's mascot silhouette to inform buyers about the declining bee population. They have joined Burt's Bees to raise awareness of this potentially catastrophic problem, using the #BringBacktheBees tag on social media.
