Live and work

Doldinger was born in Berlin, and entered the DÃÆ'¼sseldorf conservatory in 1947, originally studied piano and then clarinet, graduating in 1957. In his student years, Doldinger gained professional performing experience, beginning in 1953 in the German band Dixieland The Feetwarmers , and recorded with them in 1955. Later that year he founded Oscar's Trio , mimicking Oscar Peterson's work. During 1960 he worked as a tenor saxophone, working by visiting American jazz musicians and recording in himself.

Doldinger's repetitive jazz project Passport , started in 1971 (later called "Klaus Doldinger's Passport"), still enjoys great success in Germany. In effect, it is sometimes called the European Version Weather Report.

At various times members of Passport include Peter O'Mara (guitar), Roberto DiGioia (keyboard), Patrick Scales (bass, since 1994), Ernst Stroer (de: Ernst StrÃÆ'¶er) (percussion, since 1989), Christian Lettner (drums, since 2000), Michael Hornek (keyboard since 2009), Biboul Darouiche (percussion, since 1995) and others. Guests included Brian Auger (1973), Johnny Griffin (1973) and Pete York (1973). The first true Passport album has strong ties with Amon DÃÆ'¼ÃÆ'¼l II which contains contributions from Olaf KÃÆ'¼bler, Lothar Meid and Jimmy Jackson, remains important to Krautrock.

Doldinger contributed film scores for the German U-boat movie Das Boot (1981) and then The NeverEnding Story (1984).

Doldinger married Inge Beck in 1960; they have three children, Viola, Melanie and Nicolas Doldinger. Since 1968 they lived in Icking, a small village in Bavaria, south of Munich.
