Phyllis Naomi Hurwitz (January 17, 1933 - August 2, 1998), better known as Shari Lewis , is an American ventriloquist, puppeteer, and entertainer of children and television host. He is famous as the original doll of the Lamb Chop doll, first appeared on Hi Mom , a local morning television show aired on WRCA-TV (now WNBC-TV) in New York City.

Lewis was born Phyllis Naomi Hurwitz (several sources quoted Sonia Phyllis Hurwitz) to Jewish parents, Ann Ritz and Abraham Hurwitz, a professor of education at Yeshiva University. She has one sister. Her parents encouraged her to perform and her father, who had been named the "official magician" of New York City by Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia during the Great Depression, taught her to perform special magic acts at the age of 13. He also received instructions in acrobatics, juggling, ice skating, spinning rods, piano, and violin. She was taught ventrilokui by John W. Cooper.

He continued his piano and violin at New York School of Music and Art, danced at the American School of Ballet, and acted with Sanford Meisner from Neighborhood Playhouse. She attended Barnard College, but left after a year to get into show business.

Careers

In 1952, Lewis and his doll won the first prize in the CBS television series Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts. Lewis later hosted several series of New York children for a decade. On July 5, 1953, Lewis made his debut as a television host on NBC's Facts N'Fun on NBC's WRCA-TV.

This program is a variety of events in which he involves viewers and spectators of his studio in games, songs, stories, crafts, information segments, and interviews with guest and personality stars. He also performs a comedy skit with two figures venting, Samson and Taffy Twinkle. The series remained in the air until 26 September 1953.

He moved to WPIX in 1953 to replace Ted Steele as the host of Club Cartoon , featuring various formats with live studio audience. Lewis performed with Randy Rocket and Taffy Twinkle, and the program also featured reruns of the Crusader Rabbit cartoon. Kartoon Klub then change the title to Shari & amp; His friends on September 23, 1956, and then to Shariland a month later.

Lewis won the New York-area Emmy Awards for her work at Shariland and the successful series on WRCA-TV, Hi Mom (1957-1959), which introduced Charlie Horse, Hush Puppy, and Wing Ding. Lamb Chop, which also appeared, was previously introduced during Lewis' guest appearance at Captain Kangaroo in March 1956.

NBC gave Lewis his first networking program, The Shari Lewis Show, which debuted on October 1, 1960, replacing The Howdy Doody Show . The show lasted until September 28, 1963, and featured characters such as Hush Puppy, Charlie Horse, Lamb Chop, and Wing Ding, a black crow. Lamb Chop, which is little more than socks with eyes, presented as an alter ego sassy to Lewis. Hush Puppy has a Southern accent and a quiet personality, while Charlie Horse is a sluggish and silly character.

In 1961, he played the title character Dulie Hudson in Watching Out for Dulie , production of Steel Hour America . He sometimes guest star on TV shows like Car 54, Where are you? , Men from the United Kingdom. , and Love, American Style .

From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, he appeared in a number of British performances, such as the Val Doonican Show and Royal Variety Performance . In 1975, Lewis briefly hosted another syndicated puppet show, called The Shari Show. In 1992, the show Lamb Chop's Play-Along started for five years on PBS. He came up with "Lamb Chop's Play-Along" as an anti-couch potato show. Lewis starred in another PBS series Charlie Horse Music Pizza which was his last project before his death. "The Charlie Horse Music Pizza" is a short live spin off series from "Lamb Chop's Play-Along". When Lamb Chop's Play-Along ended Shari and her husband Jeremy created The Charlie Horse Music Pizza to teach children about music after talking about what kids love best. Because one-third of elementary schools cut music classes from their curriculum at a time when Shari and Jeremy felt that they had to introduce the kids to the music through the show.

Video Lamb Chop Specialization was released in 1996 and received the Choice of Parents award this year. Lamb Chop and he both appeared in an ad for PrimeStar in 1997.

When Lewis appeared before the Congress in 1993 to testify in favor of protection for children's television, Lamb Chop was given permission to speak.

As an accomplished musician, he performed large symphonies in the United States, Japan, and Canada. He wrote many books and produced 17 home videos.

Other Lewis's works include providing Princess voices in the "Arab Knights" cartoon segment, part of the 1968 series The Banana Splits Adventure Hour. Together with her husband, Jeremy Tarcher, she wrote an episode for the original Star Trek series, "The Lights of Zetar" (1969). Lewis wrote over 60 books for children.

Personal life

Lewis retained his last name from his first relatively short marriage to Stan Lewis. Her second husband is publisher Jeremy Tarcher, brother of novelist Judith Krantz. Shari meets Jeremy at the radio show set. A year after the date they married. Lewis and Tarcher welcomed their daughter Mallory Lewis on June 19, 1963.

Mallory Tarcher wrote for the Play-Along Lamb Chop and The Charlie Horse Music Pizza show. He legally changed his last name to Lewis and continued his mother's work with Lamb Chop in 2000. On September 20, 2015, 17 years after his death, Shari's husband Jeremy Tarcher died of Parkinson's disease. He was 83 years old at the time of his death. Jeremy remarried after Shari died. Jeremy's second wife preceded him in death. Prior to his death, Shari Lewis sold Lamb Chop rights to DreamWorks. Her daughter Mallory still has live performance rights for Lamb Chop.

Health and death

Lewis was diagnosed with uterine cancer in June 1998. After being diagnosed, he insisted on recording the latest episode of The Charlie Horse Music Pizza. She had previously been treated for breast cancer in 1984. The doctors told Shari that her cancer was inoperable. He underwent a hysterectomy and was given six weeks to live. After recovering from a hysterectomy, he started chemotherapy at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. While undergoing chemotherapy, he developed viral pneumonia and died on August 2, 1998, at the age of 65 years. His body was cremated. She survived by her husband, daughter, and sister. After his death The Charlie Horse Music Pizza was canceled. The last episode of "The Charlie Horse Music Pizza" aired on January 17, 1999.
