Shi Xiangyun (traditional Chinese: simplified Chinese ??? ; pinyin: Sh? Xi? Ngy̮'̼n ) is the main fictional character in the 18th century Chinese classic novel Dream of the Red Chamber , one of the characters known as the Twelve Beauties. He is Baoyu's second cousin who is younger than the Widow, Grandma Jia. Xiangyun is the favorite grandson of the Widow, Baoyu grandmother.
Orphan since infancy, he grew up under the supervision of his rich dad and uncle who lived in Jinling. They use him badly to do embroidery and sewing for the family until late at night. Despite his misfortune, he is always cheerful and ready to play a little joke. His cheerfulness and openness make his jokes unforgivable by most people. He is also very good in embroidery and frankly without wisdom. He wears a golden qilin around his neck.
Xiangyun is described as a tomboyish-ish girl who does not cultivate the very subtle nature of feudal women. She looks fine in men's clothes and likes to drink and eat meat. Apparently the beauty of androgyny, his cousin always asks the Widow to send for him so that he can visit them, because Xiangyun is a big hearted girl, and the visitors and the company are remarkable.
Like almost every woman from Jia Clan, Xiangyun studied. He is almost as poetic as Daiyu or Baochai, and he is a mainstay of the Crab Flower Club, founded by Tanchun and Daiyu.
Daiyu initially felt a little jealous because of Xiangyun and Baoyu's good relationship but eventually got warm to the cheerful girl. Xiangyun became one of Daiyu's closest friends.
One of the more memorable scenes in the book (in Chapter 62) has made Shi Xiangyun drunk and fallen asleep among the flowers on the stone bench in Prospect Park, surrounded by butterflies, with his half-buried fan in the scattered petals. This scene is depicted in many works of art featuring novel characters.
In continuation by Gao E and Cheng Weiyuan, Xiangyun married but soon widowed.
