The Michigan Technological University sports team is called Huskies. The Huskies participated in the NCAA Division II as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, a member of the Central Collegiate Ski Association for male and female nordic skiing, and NCAA Division I Western Collegiate Hockey Association for men's ice hockey.

Men's ice hockey team is the only athletic program at MTU to compete in the I Athletics division. The Huskies compete in the Hockey Association Western Collegiate. Michigan Tech has had a storied history since the beginning of 1919, producing three national championships. The program has played in five different home arenas including Amphidrome, Calumet Colosseum, Dee Stadium, and MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Husky hockey program was a member of the WCHA charter in 1951 and became a national powerhouse under the leadership of Coach John MacInnes during the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s. The team has won three NCAA Division I championships (1962, 1965, and 1975) and eight Western Collegiate Hockey Association championships (1962, 1965, 1969, 1971, 1974, 1976 and 2017).

The Huskies host and compete in the annual Big Lakes Invitational which is held in December each year. The four-team tournament is played for the 48th year in 2012, with the Huskies defeating Western Michigan with a score of 4-0, to win their 10th GLI championship, and their first since 1980.

Football

The football program at Michigan Tech has been around for more than 80 years. They played their home game at Sherman Field. On March 18, 2003, the football program was abolished due to budget cuts made by the university, but through alumni funding, the program was returned ten days later. The 2004 football season brings the Huskies into the spotlight by winning the GLIAC championship. The 2004 season was also in the spotlight for the football program because "Bash at the Big House," a football game played at the Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor against rivals Grand Valley State University trying to set attendance records all the time. The team is the 2004 GLIAC champion.

In 1981, Head Coach Jim Kapp retired after a six-year record of 41-30-2. During Kapp's first three years as coach and Ted Kearly's last three years, the Huskies set a 52-12-1 record. In 1981 Ron Marciel was hired as head coach and only lasted for two seasons.

The winner of the annual match against Northern Michigan University was awarded the Miner's Cup.

Female Women's basket

The Women's Basketball team starts the 2009-2010 season at number one, and stays in the top five for the entire season. They went on to win the GLIAC Tournament, moving them to Elite 8 for two consecutive years, this time in Missouri. The team also ranked first for most seasons nationwide. Along with this successful season, there are many broken records for Michigan Tech. These include: the best percentage of wins, most of the wins, the majority of home wins, the longest winning streak, the longest winning streak, and the percentage of the best free throws.

From the beginning in 2003 coaching the Women's Basketball team, head coach John Barnes led the Huskies to success. Barnes won the GLIAC coach this year in 2005-2006 and returned in 2008-2009. He is also named the Coach of the Women's Basketball Coaches Coach this year. Barnes held under his belt 1 place NCAA Elite 8, 4 NCAA Tournament berths, 2 GLIAC Northern Division Championships in the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons, and 1 GLIAC Championship Tournament in the 2007-2008 season of his time with Huskies.

Assistant coach Kim Cameron is finishing his fifth year with the Women's Basketball team after being appointed for position in September 2005. Cameron not only acts as a recruitment and travel coordinator, but also coordinates the women's basketball summer camp. Kim Cameron will take over the position of head coach for Michigan Tech Huskies for 2010-2011 after John Barnes resigned to become assistant coach for Badgers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Michigan Tech strongly supports their academic programs. Each player on the team has at least an average 3.0 points. In 2009-2010, the country's # 1 MTU Basketball Basketball Team by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association averages the overall team score. The Michigan Tech Huskies has a remarkable 3.732 GPA. It's higher than any women's basketball team in any division, two teams.

The Michigan Tech Huskies reached the national championship (the farthest they ever went) on March 25, 2011 against Clayton State University Lakers. They lost 69-50 at the Civic Center in St. Louis. Joseph's, MO. They successfully deflected Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State in the top four with a 89-78 victory. In the Eight Eight Huskies managed to beat the rankings of Arkansas Tech University Golden Suns rankings with a 69-58 victory. All Arkansas Tech fans are confident they will go to the championship so they have all the parts that have been reserved for them in the national championship game. In the Midwest Regional Championship, Michigan Tech Huskies defeated University of Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers 69-57. In the second half, Michigan Tech beat the Drury Panthers 60-51, and in the first round beat Lewis Flyers 72-56. This year also produced other GLIAC Championship teams as they beat Tiffin Dragons in the first round 58-40, Hillsdale 69-58 racers, and Ashland Eagles in the 63-53 championship game. The Michigan Tech Huskies completed the 31-3 season with their losses only coming to Clayton State University 69-50, Concordia University-St. Paul 78-70, and Ferris State University 63-60.

The Michigan Tech Huskies is the 2010-11 National Runner-up, 7-times GLIAC Champions, 25 times GLIAC Tournament Appearances, NCAA Tournament Appearances 18 times, and 4-time Midwest Region champions.

Nordic skiing

Like many schools in the northernmost areas of MTU United States of nordic ski fields of men and women. The Huskies ski team competes at the Central Collegiate Ski Association, an NCAA special athletic conference. MTU has its own downhill ski/snowboard hill, Mont Ripley, just across from Portage Lake from campus, and maintains an extensive cross-country ski trails (used for mountain biking in the summer).

Track and put

One of the Division II sports of Michigan Technological University is the men's and women's outdoor and outdoor course. The women's team appeared in 1984, in addition to the men's team. The school also funded indoor track and field teams until 1991 but had to cut its university status due to a lack of funding for sports scholarships. Due to the renovation of Sherman Field and the high cost of repairs, the outdoor tracks are partly torn and unusable for the tracks to meet in the summer of 2008. This means the track team currently travels mostly in Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Lower Peninsula to meet, allowing them to continuing various competitions.

Female Women's Volleyball

The women's volleyball team at Michigan Tech was first formed in 1975 under Title IX. The first coach was Cheryl Depuydt, Michigan Tech skating instructor. When a soccer coach, Ted Kearly, needs a female athletic trainer, DePuydt Coach, or Cheryl because he is known, volunteered to train both women's basketball and women's volleyball. He initially coached both teams unpaid, in addition to his regular class as a skating instructor. Not only was she the first female coach, she was the first female instructor and department chairman until her death in 2006, after a battle with cancer. Cheryl is very important to develop women's volleyball and athletics at Michigan Tech.

MTU Volleyball has qualified for the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament seven times. The 2009 season is the last season the team qualify for the tournament. The volleyball team has a reputation of having a good academic position in the GLIAC conference. They have had 30 players over the last four years earning the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic Honors.

The Huskies were trained by Matt Jennings, a former assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh, DePaul University, and Eastern Kentucky. In his first season as coach, the 2012 team completed 12-19 overall conferences and 7-11, 10 games each and 7 matches.

The team is trained by Orlando Gonzalez for 3 seasons (2011, 2010, 2009). Previously to train at Tech he trained at Rutgers University from 2005-2007. He also spent nearly 10 years in head coaches to the top elite club, USA Michigan Volleyball.

The previous coach for Huskies was Krista Mikesch, who is a former player at Tech. He is an outstanding athlete and an All-American setter from 1993-1996. He started all four years that he attended MTU and his first year he helped the Huskies into the first NCAA tournament offer. He trained two seasons as an assistant at Michigan Tech starting in April 1999 and then spent seven seasons as head coach. In 2006, under Mikesch, the team recorded an overall record of 15-15. This is their best season since 2001, where it has an overall record of 18-12. Krista Mikesch resigned as head coach volley after the 2008 season, where the Huskies finished with a 19-11 record. Mikesch left Tech with an overall record of 137-165 in 11 seasons.
