Plot

DJ Williams is a young man in downtown Los Angeles. He and his younger brother Duron compete in local dance competitions as crew members known as "Goon Squad". During the battle there are backs and forths, but at the end of the battle, Goon Squad wins the cash prize, and the opposing crew leader fights double or none at all, which the DJ receives much anxiety his brother knows that if the opposing crew leader thinks he rushed, the crew would not be able to spend the money they won, the Goon Squad won the second battle and the losing crew responded by ambushing DJs and crews after the show. Fights broke out, and the opposing crew leader started beating DJs. Duron pushes him and starts to fight him, leading a rival to pull out a gun and shoot Duron, killing him.

Arrested for being attacked, the DJ was sent by his mother to live with his aunt Jackie and his uncle Nate in Atlanta, Georgia, where he will attend the University of Truth in history. Nate, director of physical plant at Truth, aims to teach the DJ's responsibilities and put him to work on maintenance as part of a work-study program.

The DJ saw April Palmer, to whom he was instantly interested. After registration, he moved into his dorm room, where he met his new roommate, Rich Brown. Rich meets DJs in the competition stepping in the greens between the rival chapters of Thea Nu Theta Nu Theta and Mu Gamma Xi. Mu Gamma Xi's crew, a seven-time national jump champion, easily stole the show until DJ saw April along the way and ran through their step in an attempt to talk to him.

That night, Rich and his friends went to a local club called Phoenix and invited DJ together. Hoping to impress April and Upstage Grants and Gammas (everything is also present), the DJ comes down to the floor. Despite the hostilities between DJ and Grant, the Gammas recognize his skills as dancers and their chaplain chair Zeke invites him to promise to Mu Gamma Xi. The DJ rejected Zeke's offer as well as an offer from the chairman of Theta Nu Theta, Sylvester.

After learning that April is a student history tutor, DJ signs up for tutoring so he can spend time with him. The two slowly begin friendship and the DJ takes April for dinner. During their date, April discussed the importance of fraternity and black associations with DJs, and told him to visit the Heritage Hall on the 'Greek Row' campus.

The next day, DJ learns about the large number of African-American historical figures and celebrities who are members of various Greek letters, and decides to promise to Theta chapter along with Rich and their friend Noel. After "crossing" to become an official member of Theta, DJ, Rich, and Noel join the team crew Thetas.

At dinner, April breaks up with Grant because of his chauvinistic attitude and his failure to know anything about him, especially that the color green is his favorite color. She gets closer to the DJ and they end up being a couple. While practicing, DJ, Rich, Noel, and other new members realize step dance step is an old fashion and not good enough to win a stepped competition. So they decided to take the time to learn a fresh movement. Sly then collects older members and challenges the DJ and the rest to vs. old school. new school step contest. The DJ blew the contest because of its showboating. They remind the DJ, as Duron did earlier in the movie, that it's about the team and not about him. The DJ apologized to the entire fraternity and was quickly forgiven. Sly also asked the DJ to show the team some of his moves.

A few days before the competition, Grant stumbled on the DJ file and found his attack record and presented it to the board. The Council then decided to delay the DJ for not disclosing his criminal record. Dr. Palmer, who was April's father, called the DJ to his office. He is willing to lift his suspension on condition that he is no longer dating April. The DJ rejects the ultimatum and walks away. The DJ then tells Nate and Jackie about the suspension. They then reveal that Jackie dated Dr. Palmer until he met Nate and there have been several feuds between Nate and Palmer since then. Jackie faces Dr. Palmer about the DJ suspension and Palmer claims he only protects April. Last April faced his father about his situation. Palmer subsequently overturned the board's decision to decide that he would rather deal with DJs in April's life than losing his daughter inside him.

The DJ's delay finally lifted and he rejoined Thetas to compete with them against Gammas in a stepped-up competition. Both teams are bound at the end and it is brought into the rule of sudden death to determine the winner. Unknown to DJ and Thetas, Gammas has recorded DJ practicing his moves before the competition. First, Grant did the exact DJ routine of the videocassette. After he finishes, DJ Grant's match moves to move, but throws in something that Gammas does not get on the tape. The Thetas eventually defeated Gammas. April takes the stage to hug and kiss the DJ and while celebrating their victory, the DJ who still wears Duron's gloves kisses his fist and throws it into the air at his brother's Honor. The Thetas then perform their new cheerfulness and take pictures when hanged in Heritage Hall.

threat of Alpha Phi Alpha boycott

The boycott of the film is threatened by the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and endorsed by Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, due to a conflict between the organization and Stomp the Yard producer Will Packer and Rob Hardy (both Alpha Phi Alpha members) for unauthorized use from several Alpha Phi Alpha trademarks in the film. The groups ended their threats when Sony Pictures and Screen Gems approved the removal of all references to the fraternity of the film. Sony and Screen Gems made the decision to donate to the Washington D. C. Martin Luther King National Journal Memorial Foundation, Jr., Alpha Phi Alpha project. The dispute scene of the Alpha Phi Alpha steppers removed from the final release print appears in both versions of the Stomp the Yard movie trailer. Despite the controversy, the filmmakers were honored by Alpha Phi Alpha at the Fraternity's 103th Anniversary Convention held in New Orleans in 2009.
