Emergency Room is an underground venue, recording studio and art space located in the Strathcona neighborhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Founded in January 2007, The Emergency Room (Strathcona) emerged from the Vancouver DIY music scene and has been used as a training room, art studio, gallery and show venues for local touring and action. The show and recordings in the Emergency Room have been through acts like AIDS Wolf, Monotonix, Sex Vid, The Usaisamonster, Zs, TITS, Sissy Spacek, Bakelite, Hot Loins, Shearing Pinx, Mutators, Petroleum By-Product, Twin Crystals, NÃÆ'¼ Sensae, White Lung, Defector, Modern Behavior, White Owl, No Gold, Ice Cream, Cheerleader Camp, and Vapid.

The Emergency Room was established and named for lack of places with an interest in noise and experimental music. It was host to a public show in an underground parking lot from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design at Granville Island. This location is known as Emergency Room (Granville Island).

The general interest in the concept evolved, and groups of artists and musicians found space to rent in Strathcona. They are renovating the location, the former fish processing factory, into a storage area. This location remains for a year and quickly sets its name through productive recordings and high energy performances. This location is known as Emergency Room (Strathcona) or, more commonly, ER.

The warehouse caught the public eye in the summer of 2008 when local media began to cover the phenomenon of the show. The scene inspired the "strange punk" label associated with various local Vancouver bands. As the popularity grows, the venue becomes crowded in every show. Police watched as rowdy people began to take to the streets every week, and the place was repeatedly fined for violations of the voice code, alcohol, and security. It is also the target of theft due to its remote location and recording equipment. They closed the warehouse at the end of 2008.

The Emergency Room also contains a recording studio run by home engineer, Jordan Koop. It has been used by countless bands for DIY/Independent releases and for releases on various record labels including, Kill Rock Stars, Summer Lovers Unlimited, Modern Grotesque, Nominal Records, Isolated Now Waves, and Hockey Dad Records.

LP Compilation

In 2008 two independent record labels of Vancouver, Nominal Records and Grotesque Modern, released a full compilation album of artists who have appeared or recorded in the Emergency Room entitled Emergency Room: Volume 1. The compilation was compared to Vancouver Complication in a review on Maximumrocknroll. The 924 limited edition vinyl pressings also include forward by co-founder Justin Gradin and a 20 page photo book.
