The Olympia: Festival of Nations film, which documented the 1936 Summer Olympics, included chants during the final 1,500 meters event and long jump. It was also documented at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, during the final basketball tournament between the United States and the Soviet Union.

However, the song was popularized in the context of ice hockey at the 1980 Winter Olympics. During the US '7-3 victory over Czechoslovakia in the second game, spectators began shouting "U-S-A! U-S-A!" to support the U.S. hockey team. The US scored a decisive victory over one of the best teams in the world. The song became the fixture of the team's remaining game and gained national attention after the US defeated the Soviet Union in what is known as "Miracle on Ice", then moved to defeat Finland for the gold medal.

Use professional wrestling

In professional wrestling, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan is famous for making a cheer during his wrestling match and inciting the mob to repeat it after him. The song has also been used by fans to mock characters who dislike the US, such as Canadian star Bret Hart, beloved in the United States, but turned his back on the country during the famous 1997 storyline; Bulgarian-born Rusev, described as coming from Russia and pledging his loyalty to Russia and its president Vladimir Putin throughout 2014/2015, all while hitting the United States with his manager Lana; and more recently, Kevin Owens, who, since capturing the United States Championship at WrestleMania 33 against Chris Jericho, proclaims himself as "American Face" despite coming from a small town near Montreal, and will continue to remind the WWE Universe that Canada is better than United States of America. He also occasionally speaks in his native French during his promotion to attract further heel heating. It has also been used to support wrestlers with pro-US. gimmicks, like Hulk Hogan, regardless of their opponent's nationality.

The September 11, 2001 attacks found a resurgence in singing during patriotic ceremonies at sporting events; the singing was also heard when US President George W. Bush visited the ruins at the World Trade Center site a week after the 2001 attacks. The singing in the ruins was started by North Hudson Firefighter Thomas Irving, who was there to clean along with many other first responders. Crowds gathered outside the White House on May 1, 2011 can hear the song "U-S-A!" after President Barack Obama announced that Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda co-founder had been killed by US forces in Pakistan. The cheers also shouted Sunday night in the only MLB baseball game held when the news broke up, between Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets. At the 2011 WWE Extreme Rules event in Tampa, Florida on the same date, the arena erupted with the U-S-A song when Osama bin Laden's death was announced by WWE Champion, John Cena.

The use of singing at a sporting event in 2013 at Adolfo Camarillo High School caused some controversy over the alleged "racist feel".

The song "U-S-A" has been adopted by English football supporters during the game against Manchester United, which has unpopular US owners with club supporters because of clubs weighing on huge debts. The opposing supporters reminded these United fans with the song "U-S-A"; this also applies to Liverpool, until the takeover of RBS. However, the singing was also used non-sarcastic by British supporters to celebrate the achievements of US players such as Tim Howard at Everton.

Chant, led by Woody Boyd, was used in the episode of "A Fine French Whine" after hearing the news that a Frenchman with Boyd's boyfriend had exceeded his visa limit and was about to be deported. It has appeared on The Jerry Springer Show, where it can be spontaneous and for no apparent reason following the standard cheering event "Jer-ry, Jer-ry!" and also often delivered by Homer Simpson on The Simpsons as a celebration of almost anything, often accompanied by the honking of his car and the headlights flickering. The song is also used in Always There Sunny in Philadelphia when gangs come up with a plan.
