The formation of dance troupe spearheaded by Mrs. Emerita E. Basilio, Philippine folk dance authority and former female sexy director of the Department of Physical Education. Along with him in this task is another dance teacher that is: Ny. Delly Nabong, Ny. Carmen Cruz, Ny. Arce Garcia, and volunteer students. Other founders include Prof. Rod Escobar Cantiveros, a faculty member of Artlets, Engineering and UST High School, and administrative assistants at the Office of Public Affairs and Alumni, in charge of publicity and promotion; and Prof. Ramon Dellosa from the School of Fine Arts and Architecture. Prof Cantiveros conducts research for the name SALINGAWI, to develop a brand new cultural dance troupe that will compete with Bayanihan, Barangay Dance Troupe and Folklorico. The first word: COPY means transfer, mobility, and GAWI means our own way of life, culture. Mutual, transfer habits and tradtions through dance. Basilio and the rest of the founders approved the name. Transcribed dance researchers interpreted into steps and expressions, thus creating a stage presentation of repetitive classroom exercises. Activity
Cheerdance
The dance troupe, along with the UST - UST Yellow Jackets' official drum squad and drum drum, are most popular as the official Cheerdance University teams for the University of the Philippines (ATA) Athletics Association (UAAP).
SDT Joined the first UAAP Cheofance Competition in 1994 (later known as Jollibee Chi -Cheer Kayo Challenge) and became champion for three consecutive years but opted out of the competition at in 1998 and instead joined the Lipton Iced Tea Cheering Competition where they won first place.
In 1999 Salinggawi returned to retake the title but failed against UP Pep Squad who won his first championship. UP Pep Squad holds the title for two more years, equaling his own Salinggawi record. In 2002, Salinggawi again won the title and held it for four years. UP Pep Squad had been a consistent runner until 2007 when UP Pep Squad won back the title. Consistent competition between the two groups develops hardcore fans and increases further competition among group members. After losing UST SDT to the championship in 2007, the Group gradually declined to third place, and in 2009, completely lost its place in the Top 3 list. In 2013, the group dropped to the 7th position, the lowest since the start of the UAAP CDC establishment. In 2014, the podium did not come up hard for the dance troupe when they were in third position behind NU and UP.
