Warpaint is a mascot paint and horse pinto for the Kansas City Chiefs National Football League (NFL) team, currently in its third incarnation. Horses were associated with the Chairman's glorious days at City Stadium when the team won two American Football League (AFL) championships, and the horse led the team's victory parade after winning at Super Bowl IV. After the original Warpaint retirement in 1989, the team used K.C. Wolves as their sole mascot from 1989 to 2009. In accordance with the AFL's 50th anniversary celebration, the Chiefs decided to bring back Warpaint tradition for the 2009 season, introducing a new horse in the team's home opener against the Oakland Raiders.

History

Initially, the horse was driven by Bob Johnson, who wore a headdress with a traditional Indian ceremonial headdress. Warpaint circles the field at the beginning of each game and after each touchdown. In the 1975 match against the Oakland Raiders, the Chiefs won 42-10, prompting Warpaint to field the field for each of the six Chiefs goals. Raiders rider John Madden, following the defeat, insinuated that "We can not beat the Chief of Police, but we almost killed their horses".

The first Warpaint was foaled in 1955, and the second in 1968. The second Warpaint died in 2005 at the age of 37 at Benjamin Stables in Kansas City where it is now buried. The horse appeared in a 1997 Chiefs game in which he received a standing ovation from a sold-out crowd.

In his final years, the horse began to experience difficulties and often lost its footing on the track that surrounds the astroturf field at Arrowhead Stadium. Then, in a match, he falls on one point, after which the original horse and camper male retired champion. The accusations also caused horses and riders to underestimate Native Americans, helping to end its use as a team mascot.

Modern day

On September 20, 2009, the new Warpaint was unveiled at the Chiefs' home opener against the Oakland Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium. This horse is driven by Susie, a Cheerleading Chief, in contrast to the original headbreaker racer in her first incarnation. Due to the positive response from fans on first appearance, Warpaint and Susie now appear in all home games, including in pregame events.
