As soon as Stacey got into the car with Angela, she revealed that the "dinner" story was a lie, she told Stacey's mother that she be allowed to meet Angela. Angry, Stacey demands to be taken home. Angela tries to explain how much she admires Stacey and wants to be like her, but Stacey is less sympathetic. Angela avoided arrest in the weeks after the incident. Although Angela was interviewed by the police, she was not named as a suspect. Angela, along with all Larks, attends the Stacey Mass Mass. Most students blame one of their classmates, Monica Whitley (Kathryn Morris), for the murder of Stacey. At first, nobody suspects Angela because she seems too good to commit a crime. Furthermore, Jamie Hall (Marley Shelton), a former friend of Angela and one of Stacey's friends, tells Angela that she has never liked Stacey, and is just scared of her.
When her first year begins, Angela becomes more involved with the community, taking on activities such as peer counseling and striping mints. Filled by Stacey's murder, one of Larks brought the idea of ââdissolution. Determined not to let this happen, Angela argues that they must remain active, noting that the group is not only important to Stacey, but also to the various community activities in which they take part. This idea not only saved Larks but also won Angela's position as secretary/treasurer.
Meanwhile, a harassment campaign was launched against Monica until she left school. At this point, the authorities continued their investigation and began re-interviewing possible suspects, including Angela. High school principal Ed Saxe declared Angela 'sick child' and that there was no problem with materialism. When the trial begins, the Prosecutor argues that Angela should be charged with first-degree murder because there is preliminary evidence. Angela's lawyer claimed it was a second-degree murder.
The judge agreed with the defense, after listening to Angela's recorded confession. Stating that, in addition to the tape, the remaining evidence is only indirect and that prosecutors failed to prove the crime had to be planned first. Angela was then sentenced to 25 years of age. Back in the church, the priest gave a homily about community responsibility for Stacey's death, stating that unrealistic expectations and unrealistic pressures to be "perfect" contributed to Angela's actions. When the movie ends, Jamie writes to Angela that she is out of Larks (gone when she realizes how cruel they are to Angela) and that she plans to leave Santa Mira High School and return to her former school, St. Joseph.

Killing of Kirsten Costas
The film is based on the murder of Kirsten Costas. On June 23, 1984, in Orinda, California, Costas was murdered by his classmate, Bernadette Protti. Protti is jealous of Costas, who is the daughter of a wealthy and very popular parent in Miramonte High School. Kirsten has been a member of the yearbook committee and a cheerleader. However, Bernadette was not accepted by the annual book committee and tried to cheerleaders, but was not elected. Kirsten, who was selected to be a cheerleader, saw Bernadette as a wannabe and did not take it seriously.
On June 23, 1984, Costas was lured with a fake invitation to dinner for Bob-o-Links, a group of college students at school. According to Protti's later testimony, he planned to take Costas to a party to befriend him, but Costas was angry when he was told there was no dinner for the new "Bobbies". The girls quarreled, and Costas fled to Alex's house and Mary Jane Arnold, who lived nearby, told them that her friend was "weird". When Costas was unable to contact his parents over the phone, Alex Arnold drove home, noting that the Pinto-the Protti family car was following them. At the house of Costas, Arnold, who sits in his car, sees the Protti attack Costas. He thought that he saw a boxing fight but, in fact, Protti stabbed Costas five times with a kitchen knife and fled. Costas's neighbor called an ambulance, but Kirsten was badly injured and died at a nearby hospital.
It took the police almost six months to find the killer Costas. After Protti passed the lie test, his alibi was not verified. After trying to confirm the Protti alibi and re-reading his lie detector test, the police know that the girl has lied. After talking to an FBI agent, Protti wrote her mother a letter in which she made a full confession. Protti claimed to have found a kitchen knife by chance, and his sister, Gina, testified in court that she used the knife in her car to cut vegetables. The Costas does not believe this story - they claim that no one will use an 18 inch (460 mm) knife to cut a tomato and that Protti, dressed casually that night, was never meant to bring Kirsten to the party, but had planned to kill him. Protti was sentenced to a maximum of nine years but was released seven years later on parole.
The Costas family left Orinda and moved to Hawaii. Protti was released from prison in 1992 at the age of 23. Costas's parents fiercely opposed the release of Protti.
