Gladiator is an Australian television series aired on Seven Network in 2008. This is a revival of the previous series of the same name, and is based on the American version of the show, which is also turned on back in 2008.

The show was filmed at The Dome at the Sydney Showground, and was hosted by Tom Williams and Zoe Naylor. Renowned referee NRL Bill Harrigan was one of two referees for the show, the other being John Forsythe, who was the referee of the original series. Although not credited, Sydney Altitude Cheerleaders is present in every episode, performing various routines in each episode whether an event is in progress or not.

Behind the scenes, highly respected military fitness experts, 'Chiefs' Brabon (power trainer and head conditioning) are responsible for preparing the gladiators for their extraordinary physical role.

The Gladiators' revival was first announced on September 9, 2007, and aired on March 30, 2008 at 6:30 pm. The Challengers in this series are competing to win A $ 50,000 and the new Subaru Forester.

There is no official announcement made by Seven Network as planned for the future.

Options

To ensure that both Gladiators, and Challengers have the highest caliber, all prospects are left to the exhausting physical selection process designed by the head & amp; trained 'Head' Brabon coach.

The so-called 'Barrier Test' is based on a similar selection program the Head has designed for the military tactical response team and elite law enforcement.

Limiting test is very successful in examination of candidate Gladiator & amp; Challenger less than 10% of applicants successfully complete the first event known as the Grunt Challenge. The challenge participants need to do burpee style exercises (Grunts) to a rhythm called by the Head himself. Challenger candidates are required to complete a minimum of 75 Grunt to pass to the next event, while Gladiator is required to complete 100 Grunts.

Development

In early 2007, an episode of the TV series Where Are They Now? feature some original Gladiators as special guests. The Seven Network uses this segment as a research to revive the event depending on the number of viewers for the episode as well as if the ranking drops after the end of the segment.

On September 9, 2007, it was officially announced by Seven that the show was revived and will return for the fourth series in early 2008. Auditions for the new gladiator were conducted via e-mail and closed on October 16, 2007 while auditions for challengers took place in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth from October 20 to November 4, 2007. After the gladiators and challengers were selected, filming all episodes for the fourth season took place from 6 January 2008 to 10 February 2008 at The Dome, Sydney Showground, New South Wales.

Speculation around who will host the new series is proven, with many reports in the media about successful or unsuccessful celebrities auditioning. Seven Network presenter Tom Williams is reportedly the only male to audition, and is taken for a male co-host role soon. For the role of female co-host, the process is more intense, with many women auditioning, including swimmers Elka Graham and Brooke Hanson as well as actors Zoe Ventoura and Samantha Noble. On December 18, 2007, it was reported in the media that former actor McLeod's Daughters actor Zoe Naylor was being seriously considered as a female host, with an insider stating that "She looks fabulous on a screen test and there is a big thrill between he and Tom.He's fresh and fun. "He was eventually chosen for a female co-host position.

With the new Gladiator selected for the new series, it was reported on December 30, 2007 that former Australian footballer Anthony Koutoufides and Olympic Pole Tattooer Tatiana Grigorieva are two of the new gladiators for the new series, but Seven Network refused to confirm the option, even though these reports were true. Strongman Derek Boyer is the third celebrity to be picked up as a Gladiator, followed by former iron player Hayley Bateup being fourth. Ten other Gladiators have non-public background.
