Histori
Sheldon High School opened in the academic year 1963-64 as a third high school in Eugene School District.
School gets its name from Dr. Henry D. Sheldon (1874-1948). Here is a quote by Martin Schmitt written for Oregon Historical Quarterly in March 1951.
Henry D. Sheldon was one of the most prominent educators in the Northwest during the first half of the century, helping to build Oregon's public high school system, educational school at the University of Oregon and the university itself.
Sheldon came to Oregon at the time of his education as the curriculum had just begun to emerge from a group of courses that included psychology, philosophy, and pedagogy (teaching). He is a pioneer in child psychology and educational inquiry. Sheldon's efforts to expand the professional education curriculum, and improve teacher education standards form the main theme of previous letters.
Dr. Sheldon immediately understood that the improvement of teacher training in Oregon was a wasted effort unless high school conditions were experiencing major increases simultaneously.
