The fifth season of the American teen drama series Gossip Girl aired on The CW on September 26, 2011, and ends on May 14, 2012, consisting of 24 episodes. Based on a novel series of the same name by Cecily von Ziegesar, the series was developed for television by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. CW officially renewed the series for the fifth season on April 26, 2011.

CW officially renewed the series for the fifth season on April 26, 2011.
On May 19, 2011, with the release of The CW's 2011-12 TV schedule, Gossip Girl remained on Monday night and moved to 8:00 pm Eastern/7:00 pm Central timeslot as lead-in Hart of Dixie , produced by Gossip Girl executive producer Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Filming for the season begins on July 7, 2011. On August 3, 2011, CW ordered two additional episodes for the fifth season, which will now number 24. Executive producer Joshua Safran announced that he would "pull out all the stops" to make the 100th episode of a special event, which is expected to air in January. On the premiere season date, the show uses a New York city scene recording showing the World Trade Center before the September 11 attacks. Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, and Ed Westwick are all back as regular series players. Kaylee DeFer was upgraded to regular series status, while Taylor Momsen and Jessica Szohr came out of the show, though they were both invited back as guest stars. Kelly Rutherford and Matthew Settle also returned as regular customers.
On April 6, 2011, 10 Things I Hate About You starring Ethan Peck landed a guest starring role at the event. Peck made his debut in the fourth season finale and is in talks with producers for a recurring role for the fifth season. Peck will later film the scene with Lively for the inaugural season. French actress and model Roxane Mesquida plays the role of Beatrice, Louis's sister and Blair's foe in a recurring role for the fifth season. Actress Elizabeth Hurley acted as media maestro Diana Payne and starred in multi-episode bows, with a character described as "a sexy, intelligent, homemade maestro and an overarching power to be reckoned with." Former actor Lost Marc Menard joins the cast in the role of Father Cavalia, a handsome priest from Monaco who will lead Blair's marriage.
Brian J. Smith, known for his role in the Stargate Universe, has been acting as a love interest for Serena when he was in Los Angeles and will appear on the show as Max, a would-be chef. Connor Paolo, who became a regular at ABC's Revenge, did not return to performances like Eric van der Woodsen stating, "I'm done.You should never come back in life just go forward." The 100th episode of this series focuses on Blair's marriage to the prince of Louis. "I think this is our biggest episode since the trial," said executive producer Joshua Safran.

This season's premier viewership was watched by 1.37 million viewers and received a rating of 0.7 in the Adult demo of 19-49, down 0.3 compared to last season's premiere. Episode 23 reached a new series that was low, hitting for the fourth time a total audience under one million viewers, to 869,000 viewers and 0.4 in demographics 18-49.
