The season marks major events that affect, or can influence, the show. Kelsey Grammer debuted as a psychiatrist Frasier Crane, intended as part of a love triangle with Sam and Diane for this season. Actress Rhea Perlman and Shelley Long are pregnant; Perlman's pregnancy is written into his character (Carla Tortelli), while Long's is hidden to avoid effects on his character (Diane Chambers). This is the last season for Nicholas Colasanto as Coach Ernie Pantusso; Colasanto died of a heart condition (dating back to the 1970s) that worsened during production, contributing to his absence from a number of episodes before his death in February 1985.

A number of events, including critical sitcoms, were tried and replaced for years. She meets upscale psychiatrist Frasier Crane, and starts dating her. A few months later, Diane returned to her apartment and learned about Sam's recurrence from Coach. With the help of Diane, Frasier and Coach, Sam recovered. At first Diane decides not to work as a waitress anymore, but Coach tells her if she does not return to the bar, Sam will recur again. The coach also tells Sam that Diane will lose his senses again, and tells Frasier that if Diane and Sam are separated, they will crave one another. As a result, Diane returned to work at the bar as a waitress. As she dated Frasier, she and Sam played with each other.

Diane and Frasier decide to elope to Europe, leaving Sam heartbroken again. One night at the bar Sam and Diane almost made love again, but realized they were not sure about their shared future. Production

After Sam and Diane's breakup in the previous season, psychiatrist Frasier Crane was introduced this season by the creators of the Glen and Les Charles series as Diane's upscale "romantic and intellectual ideal." Frasier is the opposite of his lower class rival, Sam Malone; as part of a love triangle he gave "a different shape for Sam-Diane's relationship", says Glen Charles. Originally planned for Frasier only appeared in the first few episodes before being dumped by Diane, when she would disappear. John Lithgow was originally chosen by the producer Cheers ' for the role, but he declined it. Kelsey Grammer (who believes he has failed his audition) was chosen for his performance with Danson, which gave rise to the praise of the performing executives and led to an expanded role in the series for his character. Before Toast , Grammar appears in the soap opera Other World and two miniseries: Kennedy and George Washington .

In late August 1984, pregnancies actress Rhea Perlman and Shelley Long were announced after at least four episodes of the season were completed. Perlman's second pregnancy was put into the show by having her character, Carla Tortelli, becoming pregnant again (with another man, not her ex Nick as it was in the first season of the series). Long's character's (Diane Chambers)) unmarried pregnancy is considered, with the father of her son either Sam or Frasier. However, the producers felt that putting Long's pregnancy into the show would have an adverse effect on her romantic character and storyline. Therefore, Long's pregnancy is hidden by placing it behind a bar stool or recording it above the waist; scenes with Diane and Frasier in Europe were filmed before Long's pregnancy became real. In March 1985, the two actresses gave birth to a baby girl.

Nicholas Colasanto, who played Coach Ernie Pantusso, suffering from heart disease since the mid-1970s, was aggravated by alcoholism. After years of calm, during the production of his heart disease worsened. Castmates noticed his weight loss, although the actor kept the secrecy of his illness. Shortly after Christmas 1984, Colasanto was admitted to a local hospital with water in his lungs. Co-Star Ted Danson later said that the veteran actor had trouble remembering his lines during the season's production. After he was released from the hospital, doctors Colasanto suggested that he not return to work. Though he appeared in the cold opening of the third season finale ("Rescue Me"), his final episode was "Cheerio Cheers" (filmed in late November 1984). Colasanto died of a heart attack at his home on February 12, 1985, at the age of 61 years. Instead of reshaping, the Colasanto Coach character was written out of the show the following season as the deceased without explanation.

Reception

Despite the praise for Kelsey Grammer from the show executive, when the original Beast ', Frasier Crane was disliked because it came between Sam and Diane. A fan approaches the Grammer, asking, "Are you the dick pin that plays Frasier?" and the event received a fan letter against it. Mike Boone from Montreal Gazette is not happy with "psychiatrists [being mediocre] hanging out in bars, drunken people who suck." Gail Shister of the Knight-Ridder Newspapers calls Frasier "the creepy boyfriend".

In a 1985 survey of 36 critics for the United States newspaper, Cheers was ranked second best of the "Regular Best Series" (binding on NBC's Hill Street Blues crime series). Mike Duffy from Knight News Service called it "the best comedy series on television... about [a] family circumstances" since The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Taxi and family characters who have a bond together in a bar where everyone knows your name ".

Then the reviews were also positive, especially when the DVD was released in 2004. Nate Meyers from digitalOfficessed! Com gave the season an "A" and called it well and "almost perfect". However, Meyers found the Coach's loss in the last eight episodes of "somewhat awkward" badly handled. He pointed out that Coach was not mentioned in the episode, and found the explanation of his departure not "natural". Nevertheless, Meyers praised the writing of the season, James Burrows directing (especially to "[deceive] the audience into believing the dream sequence" at the end of season "Rescue Me"), humor this season as "character and situation driven" (though "[a] some jokes dated ") and his ability to focus less on humor and more on the" original character moments "as" refreshing "compared to other sitcoms of the time.

Adam Arseneau from DVD Ruling gave the storyline (including featuring Norm and Cliff) 89 percent and acting 94 percent. However, Arseneau found this season not the best or the worst of this series. Although Frasier was created to come between Sam and Diane, Arseneau praised the addition of a new character but criticized the love-triangle storyline as "disappointing". Like Meyers, Arseneau dislikes the Coach's "absent" handling for disrespecting Nicholas Colasanto's memory and "fan [robbers] of their chance to properly and respectfully mourn his death."

Jeffrey Robinson of DVD Talk rated this season four out of five stars and found his DVD releases highly redeemable. Robinson says that his plot is not complicated, praising the acting and writing of this season as "amazing" and likes the introduction of Frasier Crane. Due to the death of Colasanto, he called this season the last for the "extraordinary" ensemble performers, finding mixing of different characters in later seasons less successful.
