Plot

Despite Giles' (Anthony Stewart Head) misgivings, Buffy decides to try for a cheerleading team to reclaim some of the happy and normal social life he enjoys in LA. During the trial, the hand of a girl named Amber spontaneously burned. An unknown person is shown using a Barbie doll dressed up like a cheerleader in a voodoo ritual as above a cauldron. The next day, Cordelia was blinded during his ed driver class, and saved from wandering into traffic at the right time by Buffy. According to Giles, the blinding enemy is a favorite trick among magicians.

Amy Madison (Elizabeth Anne Allen), another competitor, appears to be under intense pressure to compete from her dominating mother (Robin Riker), a cheerleader star of her day, and was devastated when she made only a substitute list after Cordelia Chase (Charisma) Carpenter ) and Buffy. Believing Amy to be a witch, Buffy, Xander (Nicholas Brendon) and Willow (Alyson Hannigan) collect some of Amy's hair during science lessons, to prove she spelled her spells. Amy goes home and orders her mother to do her homework, while she goes upstairs with the bracelet she stole from Buffy during the class.

The next morning Buffy behaved somewhat unstable. He blew his chance on the cheerleading squad as he threw the cheerleader's head, Joy, through the room, handing his place to Amy. Buffy turns out to have something more than just a mood disorder: the blood rock revenge spell has destroyed his immune system, giving him only about three hours to live. The only way to heal him and break another spell is to get a magician's spell book and turn his magic. Buffy and Giles are sick with Amy's mother, Catherine, and find out that Catherine changed her body with her daughter months earlier, saying that Amy is wasting her youth, so she picks it up for herself. Giles finds a wizard's book and brings Amy and Buffy back to school to break the spell.

Amy/Catherine cheers the Sunnydale basketball team when she starts to get a glimpse of what Giles is doing. Xander and Willow could not stop him from rushing to the science lab with an ax, but bought enough time for Giles to break the spell: Amy and Catherine were restored to their own bodies, and Buffy felt well enough to fight. However, Amy's mother's strength is too great, and it's only by reflecting on her last mantra that Buffy saved the day. Catherine disappeared with a scream.

When Amy and Buffy talked in the school hall the next day, they passed the trophy collection where the cheerleading trophy "Catherine the Great" stood. While the two girls wondered where Amy's mother ended, the camera pulled close to the face of the statue, revealing her mother's eyes and muffled voice pleading for help.

Broadcast and reception

The "Witch" was first broadcast on The WB on March 17, 1997. It attracted an audience of 3.2 million households.

Noel Murray from The A.V. The Club gives episode B a value, describing it as "entertaining hours with semi-intelligent touch". She likes the attention given to Joyce's role as Buffy's mom, but feels that more can be done with the cheerleading storyline. A review from the BBC called it "predictable" and stated that "the script does not shine like the two previous episodes of Whedon, and often lacks subtlety". However, reviews praised the curse and Buffy under the spell. Phillip Duncan of DVD Talk described "Witch" as "[an] eye-catching look at peer pressure" and wrote, "Whedon and his crew easily took what should have been a simple monster-of-the-week plot and grinded it firmly in at here and now.
