The 2009 Oregon Ducks football team represents the University of Oregon at the 2009 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The team is headed by head coach Chip Kelly in his first season as head coach at Division I FBS level. Kelly was only the third head coach of the Ducks since 1977 and led the Duck to the Pac-10 Championship and was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year. He took over for Mike Bellotti.
Ducks finished the season 10-3, 8-1 at Pac-10 to claim the Pac-10 championship and get the BCS auto conference spot where they were invited to the Rose Bowl, the Rose Bowl's fifth school and first since the 1994 season. They were defeated by Ohio State 26-17.

Previous season
The Oregon Oregon 2008 football team is entering the season that ranks 21th in Poll AP, having finished the 2007 season at 23rd. The main question of getting into the season is concerned with the position of the quarterback. Two of Oregon's best quarterbacks, Dennis Dixon and Brady Leaf, had graduated the previous year, with Dixon recruited by Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Sophomore Justin Roper was appointed as a starter after Nate Costa suffered a season-ending injury before the season began. As a freshman, Roper led the Ducks to a Sun Bowl victory over South Florida in 2007. He was injured in the third game at Purdue, and was replaced by junior college transfer Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli has led his junior college team to the national championship the previous year. Masoli is inconsistent in his first few matches, as he puts up hasty numbers well but with weak stats. But he came up strongly in the last three games of the regular season and led the Ducks to a regular 9-3 season record and victory over Oklahoma State Cowboys at the Holiday Bowl.
Senior Jeremiah Johnson led Oregon rushing by 1,201 yards, while LeGarrette Blount recorded 1,002 yards and set a school record with 17 hurried goals. Oregon scored more than 500 points for the second season in a row, and finished the season ranked 10th in the AP Poll.

Game summary
Boise State
2nd meeting. 0-1 All Time. Last Meeting Boise State 37, Oregon 32
Combination uniform: white helmet, white shirt, white pants
Oregon crime is completely closed in the first half and can not get the first one down. They let the Broncos get into their red zone several times, but the Oregon defense held them twice. Both times resulted in Boise State trying to reach the field goal after having the first situation and goals. Both field goals in the first quarter were missed by Kyle Brotzman's kicks (29 and 47). In the second quarter, the Broncos scored with a TD pass from quarterback Kellen Moore to wide receiver Austin Pettis. Michael Choate ran in a two-point conversion. Billy Winn added to Boise State's first-half score by tackling LeGarrette Blount's back run for safety. At the end of the first half, Kyle Brotzman did a 45-yard field kick to score 13-0. Half a low score second half did not stop Duck from scoring along with a two-point conversion. The rest of the game was back and forth until the end of the hour, Boise State won by 11.
After the game, Blount, who was quoted earlier in the week as saying, "We are indebted to the team," Bronco DE DeCron Hout pressed on the chin after Hout taunted him in front of Boise head coach Chris Petersen. Blount then left after fans in the southern end of the southern zone zone before being detained and escorted off the pitch by Oregon police, security and coaches. The next day, Oregon suspended Blount for the remainder of the season, apparently ending his career. However, in October, Kelly announced that Blount could return as early as November provided he meets certain academic and behavioral benchmarks.
Purdue
Combination uniform: green helmet, green shirt, green trousers
The Ducks evened their 2009 record at 1-1 with a thrilling 38-36 victory over Purdue on their first visit to Eugene. Jeremiah Masoli rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown and LaMichael James hurried as far as 56 yards. Walter Thurmond III returned an interception for a goal in the first half and Javes Lewis again misses for a touchdown in the third quarter. With one minute and one second left to play Purdue failed on a two-point conversion that would tie the game. Oregon recovered a quick kick effort and ran out of the clock. Jamere Holland had 72 yards at 4 receptions but failed to score in the fourth quarter.
Utah
Combination uniform: white helmet, green shirt, silver trousers
Utah brought the longest winning streak of 16 years to the Autzen Stadium this year. This is the first meeting between schools since Utah's 17-13 victory in Salt Lake City in 2003. Utes's last trip to the Autzen Stadium was in early September 2001, when Joey Harrington and Duck handled Utah 24-10 on their way to an 11- 1 and No. 2 on the Nation is complete.
California
Combination uniform: throwback uniform, yellow helmet, green shirt, yellow trousers
Cal ran three times in a row against Duck, more than any other Pac-10 school against Oregon. The Golden Bears streak is their longest versus Oregon since the 1970s. Cal won the water-drenched match at Berkeley last year, 26-16.
The Oregon Ducks quarterback Jeremiah Masoli struggled in the previous game but had a major breakthrough against Cal, throwing 253 yards with 21 finishes of 25 trials, three for touchdown. Oregon's tight ending Ed Dickson has a career day with 11 catches for 148 yards and three touchdowns. The Oregon defense played very well, holding Jahvid Best who tied Pac-10's record to rush the touchdown the previous week, just 55 yards on 16 carry. Before the game, Best was quoted as saying that the Autzen Stadium was the only place where the commotion had disturbed him.
The duck had a bad start to the game when Walter Thurmond fumbled the kickoff opening reception. Thurmond was hit on the knee on his return and was later diagnosed with a torn ACL and eventually lost in the rest of the season. Cal took over possession and, on a drive that went for eight yards negatively, scored the field goal, their only point in the game. Both teams back and forth with some miscues. In the first quarter on the Ducks' first scoring drive, running back LaMichael James fumbled the ball and was picked up by Cal defense back Josh Hill. During the run back, Hill fumbled the ball again found by Oregon. In the second quarter, Cal was recovered by Oregon, only to fumble the ball back in the next game. Later that quarter, Oregon punter Jackson Rice kicked the ball off the sides of his feet for a 5-yard shot. After a quick three-and-out by Cal, Brian Anger, Cal punter, boots the ball off the sides of his feet for a 5-yard kick. Masoli's first goal rate of the season came in the first few seconds of the second quarter, a 26-yard finish to Ed Dickson.
Due to Kal's first field target, Itik went ahead with scoring 42 unanswered points to win the match. It was the worst defeat of Cal with Jeff Tedford as head coach.
Washington State
Combination uniform: black helmet, yellow shirt, black pants
Oregon has won two in a row, and four of the last five against Washington State. The last two games resulted in 63-14 and 53-7 victories by Duck. Cougars have not won at Autzen since 2003 when they beat Oregon 55-16.
UCLA
Combination uniform: green helmet, white jersey, green pants
Oregon won last year's match with UCLA 31-21 in Eugene. The last trip Duck to the Rose Bowl in 2007 was a degrading experience, as they closed for the first time since 1985 with a score of 16-0. But the game was played a week after they lost QB star Dennis Dixon with an injury for the season. At the time of the match, current Bruins head coach Rick Neuheisel is 4-2 against Duck going back to the days he coached the Colorado Buffalo and Washington Huskies. Since the first game in 1928, UCLA led the series 39-23.
With a solid performance in the first half and leading the field leading into the dressing room, the Bruins gave three quick goals in minutes in the third quarter to give their fifth Duck a win this season. The Ducks scored in the 100-yard return of Kenjon Barner, on a 31-yard interception of Talmadge Jackson, and Nate Costa's 20-yard pass to Jeff Maehl, resulting from UCLA's fault.
Bruins scored only when Akeem Ayers intercepted a Costa pass behind the northern end zone of the Rose Bowl by keeping his feet tied. Kai Forbath kicked a 52-yard field goal to give UCLA an early lead. Oregon's Rob Beard attempted a 51-yard field goal, which was blocked by Jerzy Siewierski. Mogan Flint kicked a 33-yard field goal for Duck in the fourth quarter.
Washington
Oregon has won five consecutive school records of their hated rivals in the north, all with 20 or more points. Washington's last victory over Bebek came at Husky Stadium in 2003.
Combination uniform: black helmet, white jersey with silver number, black pants
After Erik Folk's 33-yard field goal in the first quarter for Washington, Oregon blocked the kick and recovered the ball in the endzone in the second quarter to give Duck their first lead. Javes Lewis intercepted Jake Locker's bait in the final zone to return the ball to Oregon, which resulted in a 1-yard Jeremiah Masoli goal. With the second remaining, Folk kicked a 48-yard field goal to end the half, which was aided by a personal offense in Oregon.
With a fine field position in their own 47 yard line, Duck scored their third goal on a 3-yard Masoli operation at the top of the third quarter.
USC
USC has never won a game in the state of Oregon for the last three years, a streak that ducks continue to live. USC beat Oregon in the Los Angeles Coliseum last year, 44-10.
Combination uniform: green helmet, green shirt, black pants
The tenth ranks Ducks handover their worst Trojan losses since 1997 and Pete Carroll suffered the worst loss in his term at USC. The ducks quarterback Jeremiah Masoli passed for 222 yards, and scored, and ran for 164 more, including touchdown, while LaMichael James ran 183 yards.
Stanford
The Ducks will go for their eighth win against Stanford this season. This is their current longest winning streak against any Pac-10 school. The seven consecutive wins also link the longest stretch of domination in the cardinal's top school history (1957-63). Oregon came from behind and won last year at Eugene on a last minute touchdown, 35-28. Stanford's last win against Oregon came at Eugene in 2001. It was the only duck loss that season, on their way to an 11-1 finish and a final No.2 ranking.
Combination uniform: green helmet, white shirt, white pants
The unbeaten conference season in Oregon ends at Stanford, 51-42. Both teams have five wins in the Pac-10 championship race.
Arizona State
Oregon has won four straight over Sun Devils with an average of 23.8 ppg, including a 54-20 victory last year in Tempe.

The previous trip by Duck to Tucson in 2007 was a devastating moment when Ducks saw their BCS National Championship Game fade when their star quarterback Dennis Dixon tore his ACL in the first half of the game. The 2009 game is also important, as it involves only two teams that week in Pac-10 who are able to control their way to get the Pac-10 Championship live.
It was a contested match as both teams led more than 10 points after Arizona's first goal in the second quarter. Jeremiah Masoli's quarterback duck started with a sluggish game with two recovered retarded and interception to set Arizona's first touchdown. At the end of the game, he led the Duck to a narrow victory with two goals and goals. After Arizona scored in the only goal in the third quarter to place them by 3, the match turned into a panicky run with many close calls. Morgan Flint tried a 43-yard field goal for the duck that got up after crashing into the crossbar, tying the game. With three minutes left in the game and Arizona up front with a touchdown, Talmadge Jackson intercepted Arizona quarterback Nick Foles pass in the final zone on 3 and 16 plays in the 40-yard line of Oregon. As Oregon trailed the field in the remaining minutes, the students flowed into Arizona's sidelines as they prepared to hurry into the field. However, the drive ends with a touchdown pass from Masoli to Dickson. The Ducks linked the game as Oregon's reserve quarterback, Nate Costa, hooking a hard kick for an extra point kicked by Flint. Part of Arizona students walk back to the stands when the overtime time begins. Both teams traded a pair of touchdowns in the first overtime but in the second overtime, Arizona settled for field goals and Oregon scored to win the game.
After the conclusion, the Arizona section at one end of the stadium next to the visiting section began throwing debris at the Oregon players. An Oregon cheerleader, Katelynn Johnson, was hit on the head with a full water bottle, making him a concussion.

The Ducks smashed Rose Beavers' Bowl aspirations for the second year in a row and managed to secure their own with a 37-33 home win over Beavers at Autzen Stadium. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli raced on top of Lance Mitchell's safety to reach the first down like his performance against UCLA and Oklahoma State last year where he ran on top of other players. Suspended running again LeGarrette Blount saw his first action since the loss of Boise State and expelled his frustrations this time in a way like a sportsman by running over Oregon State defender Keaton Kristick who is considered the most feared player in Pac-10. Blount also behaves stiffly and throws Stephen Paea to the ground that is considered the best defensive tackle in Pac-10. When Oregon went down 30-21 Blount was released and rushed for a 12-yard touchdown to bring the game closer before Lamichael James was freed for 52 on the touchdown run. Total Blount rushes 7 times for 51 yards and touchdown.
Ohio State (Rose Bowl)
Combination uniform: white helmet, green shirt, white pants
Oregon returned to the Rose Bowl for the fifth time and the first since the 1994 season. That year Duck lost No. 1. No. 2 and the unbeaten Penn State, 38-20. Oregon never defeated Ohio State in its previous seven meetings. Their last meeting took place in Columbus in 1987, with Duck losing 24-14. Oregon and Ohio State had played in the Rose Bowl before. The 1958 Rose Bowl game turned into a defensive struggle because the Duck eventually lost out to the much loved Buckeyes 10-7. The State of Ohio will be handing out the National Title that year, the Duck will have to wait another 37 years to return to Pasadena. Duck QB Jack Crabtree was named MVP of the game that year, the last and only second time that someone from the losing team has been given that honor. This time the Duck will try to win the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1917, a 14-0 victory over Pennsylvania. The Oregon Ducks lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Rose Bowl in 2010, 26-17.
