The University of Kansas , also referred to as KU or Kansas , is a public research university in the US state of Kansas. The main campus in Lawrence, one of the largest colleges in Kansas, is on Mount Oread, the highest elevation in Lawrence. Two branch campuses are in the Kansas City metropolitan area: Edwards Campus in Overland Park, Kansas, a medical school and university hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, and a hospital and research center in Topeka, Kansas. There are also educational and research sites in Parsons, Kansas, Topeka, Kansas, Garden City, Kansas, Hays, Kansas, and Leavenworth, Kansas, and branches of medical schools in Wichita, Kansas and Salina, Kansas. The University is one of 62 members of the American University Association.
Founded on March 21, 1865, the university opened in 1866, under a charter granted by the Kansas State Legislature in 1864 after allowing legislation passed in 1863 under the Kansas State Constitution, adopted two years after the acceptance of 1861 of the former Kansas Area as the 34th State to the Union after an internal civil war known as "Bleeding Kansas" during the 1850s.
Enrollment at the Lawrence and Edwards campuses is 28,401 students by 2016; an additional 3,383 students enrolled at KU Medical Center for enrollment of 28,091 students at three campuses. The university as a whole employs 2,814 faculty members in the fall of 2015.

On February 20, 1863, Kansas Governor Thomas Carney signed the law on state university law at Lawrence. The law is conditioned on a reward from Lawrence of a $ 15,000 perennial fund and a site for universities, in or near the city, not less than forty acres (16 ha) of land. School of Architecture, Design and Planning (SADP)
The School of Architecture, Design and Planning of the University of Kansas (SADP), with its main building being Marvin Hall, traces its architectural roots to create a degree in architectural engineering at the KU School of Engineering in 1912. The Bachelor of Architecture was added in 1920. In 1969, The School of Architecture and Urban Design (SAUD) was formed with three programs: architecture, architectural engineering, and urban planning. In 2001, architectural engineering merged with civil and environmental engineering. The design program of the discontinued School of Fine Arts was merged into schools in 2009 to form the current School of Architecture, Design and Planning.
According to the journal DesignIntelligence , which annually publishes "America's Best School of Architecture and Design," the School of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Kansas was named the best in the Midwest and ranked 11th among all architecture program scholars in the US in 2012.
Business School
The University of Kansas School of Business is a public business school on the main campus of the University of Kansas at Lawrence, Kansas. KU School of Business was founded in 1924 and has over 80 faculty members and about 1500 students.
Named one of the best business schools in the Midwest by the Princeton Review, the KU School of Business has been continually accredited by the Association for Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for undergraduate and graduate programs in business and accounting.
In 2016, the University of Kansas completed the construction of a new home for a business school, named Capitol Federal Hall. It's located at 1654 Naismith Drive, near KU's Rec Center and across the street from Allen Fieldhouse. Capitol Federal Hall is a 166,500 square foot building complete with state of the art technology and several research laboratories.
Faculty of Law
The University of Kansas Faculty of Law, founded in 1878, is the top law school in the state of Kansas, and is tied to 65 national, by 2016 US. News & amp; World Report "U.S. Best Class Rating was held at Green Hall on W 15th St. and Burdick Dr., named after former dean James Green.
Technical School
KU School of Engineering is an ABET accredited technical school located on the main campus. The School of Engineering was formally founded in 1891, although an engineering degree was awarded in early 1873.

School of Journalism and Mass Communication
School of Journalism and Mass Communications William Allen White is recognized for his ability to prepare students for work in various media. The School offers two areas of study: 1) News and Information, and 2) Strategic Communication. This professional school teaches students reporting for print, online and broadcast, strategic campaigns for PR and advertising, photojournalism and video reporting and editing. The J-School students maintain various publications on campus, including The University Daily Kansan, Jayplay magazine, and KUJH TV. In 2008, Fiske Guide to Colleges praised KU J-School for his strength. In 2010, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication took second place in the prestigious national Hearst Foundation writing competition.
Medical Center
The University of Kansas Medical Center has three schools: School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Health Professions each having its own course of study. In the Fall 2013 semester, there are 3,349 students enrolled in KU Med. The Medical Center also offers four-year instruction on the Wichita campus, and has a medical school campus in Salina, Kansas devoted to rural health care.

Edwards Campus, Overland Park
KU's Edwards Campus is in Overland Park, Kansas. Established in 1993, the goal is to provide adults with the opportunity to complete undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs. Tuition Fee
Beginning in the 2007-2008 academic year, the first freshman at KU pays a 48-month permanent fee in accordance with the Four-Year Course Loan authorized by the Kansas Board of Governors. For the academic year 2014-15, tuition is $ 318 per credit hour for new students and $ 828 for new students out of state. For transfer students, who do not take part in compact college tuition, 2014-15 per credit hour is $ 295 for undergraduate students and $ 785 for overseas students; subject to annual increase. Athletics
School sports teams, wearing red and blue, are called Kansas Jayhawks. They participated in the NCAA Division I and in the 12th Big Conference. KU has won thirteen National Championships: five men's basketball (two Helms Foundation championships and three NCAA championships), three on indoor indoor and indoor tracks, three on the men's track and field, one across the country and one on women's outdoor tracks and fields. The home course for KU Cross Country is Rim Rock Farm. Their latest championship came on June 8, 2013 when the women's team and the KU field team won the outdoor NCAA in Eugene, Oregon became the first women's team of the University of Kansas to win the national title.
KU football dates from 1890, and has played at the Orange Bowl three times: 1948, 1969, and 2008. They are currently coached by David Beaty, who was hired in 2014. In 2008, under the leadership of Mark Mangino, the # 7 Jayhawks emerged victorious in their first BCS bowl game, FedEx Orange Bowl, with a 24-21 win over # 3 Virginia Tech Hokies. The University of Kansas has more teams (70) competing in the National Debate Tournament than any other university. The university newspaper is The University of Daily Kansan , placed first in the Intercultural Writing Competition of the prestigious William Randolph Hearst Writing Competition, often called "The Pulitzers of College Journalism" in 2007. In the Winter of 2008, a group of students makes KUpedia, a wiki about all of ME stuff. They receive student funding for operations in 2008-09. KU Department of English publishes Coal City Review , annual prose literary journal, poetry, reviews and illustrations. The Reviews typically feature the work of many authors, but periodically highlights one author, as in the case of the 2006 Award Winner Poetry Voyeur Poems by Matthew Porubsky.
The University Daily Kansan operates outside the university of William Allen's White School of Journalism and reaches at least 30,000 readers daily through its print and online publications
The university has the following public broadcasting stations: KJHK, student-run campus radio stations, KUJH-LP, independent stations primarily broadcasting public affairs programs, and KANU, an NPR-affiliated radio station. Kansas KANU Public Radio Station is one of the country's first public radio stations. KJHK, the campus radio rooted back to 1952 and really run by students.

University of Kansas Memorial Corporation
The first union was built on campus in 1926 as the center of the campus community. Unions are still the "living spaces" of the campus and include three locations - the Union of Kansas and Burge Union at Lawrence Campus and Jayhawk Central at Edwards Campus. The KU Memorial Unions Corporation manages KU Bookstore (with seven locations). The KU Bookstore is the official bookstore of KU. The corporation also includes KU Dining Services, with more than 20 campus locations, including The Market (inside Kansas Union) and The Underground (located at Wescoe Hall). KU Bookstore and KU Dining Services are not looking for profits, with results that support student programs, such as Student Union Activities.
KU Endowment
KU Endowment was founded in 1891 as the first foundation of America for state universities. Its mission is to partner with donors to provide philanthropic support for building a larger University of Kansas.
